Job Details

Are you an ambitious researcher or industry practitioner with a background in understanding and developing business cases for financing environmental solutions such as green infrastructure, sustainable water management and restoring degraded landscapes?

Do you want to be part of an international programme of work?

Do you want to be part of a major centre deriving socio-economic impact from environmental science?

This new exciting role will develop work on the economic valuation of nature based solutions (NBS) and ecosystem services in two major research projects at the University of Leeds. The successful candidate will work in international interdisciplinary teams delivering top quality research and research translation aimed at generating societal impact in the UK and internationally. NBS provide environmental, social and economic benefits and help build resilience. They are solutions that are inspired and supported by nature. Such solutions bring more, and more diverse, nature and natural features and processes into cities, landscapes and seascapes, through locally adapted, resource-efficient and systemic interventions. This post relates to two of the University's major NBS research programmes. First, the University of Leeds has a leading role in the Horizon 2020 ThinkNature project ( www.think-nature.eu/ ). Environmental valuation is needed to support the research and policy innovation agenda on nature based solutions (NBS) and the successful candidate will lead on this through the assessment of demonstration projects across Europe and globally.

Research is needed to improve the business case development process for NBS and to bring together the different programmes and agents across Europe.Second, the Yorkshire Integrated Catchment Solutions Programme iCASP is a £6 million NERC-funded impact centre at the University of Leeds. iCASP seeks to work with partners across the Yorkshire region to develop significant social and economic impact, embedding environmental catchment science into policy, business cases and NBS actions to make them more effective. iCASP funds and supports NBS initiatives, which are co-developed by non-academic partners and academic researchers. You will either hold a PhD (or be close to obtaining, i.e. the initial thesis needs to have been handed in at the point of application) in environmental economics, finance, business management or a related discipline; or have a Master's degree in a relevant discipline and comparable industry experience. You will also have a strong understanding of environmental, catchment issues and nature based solutions and have an ability to rapidly assimilate a broad range of economic, environmental and social information for quantitative analysis.
