Associate Professor/Senior Lecturer/Lecturer in the Department of English Language and Linguistics

Requirements:

Candidates applying at an Associate Professor and Senior Lecturer level, should have a demonstrable knowledge of, and experience in teaching in, one or more of the following disciplinary areas (preference will be given to candidates with expertise in more than one of these areas): discourse analysis, sociolinguistics, corpus linguistics, language acquisition, sign language linguistics, and psycholinguistics. Candidates applying at a Lecturer level, should be able to teach in one or more of the above mentioned disciplinary areas (preferably more).

Associate Professor Level

A PhD in linguistics with a track record of research and publication in one or more areas of linguistics broadly conceived. Candidates should have considerable teaching experience at the undergraduate and post graduate levels required including Masters and PhD levels. Research supervision to completion of Masters and PhD degrees required.

Senior Lecturer level

A PhD in linguistics with a track record of research and publication in one or more areas of linguistics broadly conceived. Teaching experience at the undergraduate and post graduate levels required. Research supervision of at least Masters' degrees to completion required.

Lecturer Level

At least a Masters' degree in linguistics or equivalent preferably with progress being made towards a PhD. Candidate should have tutoring or facilitation experience at this level.

Please note that this appointment will be made in line with the requirements of the Employment Equity Act of RSA and the University's recruitment and selection policies and equity strategies. The initial focus will be on equity candidates.

In terms of Immigration Legislation (Act No. 13 of 2002 & Regulations), international staff members (non-SA citizens) have to comply with the provisions of the Act. This therefore means that the period of employment to non-SA citizens will be guided by the validity period of the work permit. In line with legislation governing employment of foreign nationals, employment contracts will be offered on the basis that a development plan would be implemented for the transfer of skills to a South African resident. The onus is on candidates to ensure that they are in possession of a valid work permit before the commencement of employment at the University, failing which the employment with Rhodes University will be terminated.

Remuneration

Associate Professor:

Basic salary Pension/Provident fund: R623, 306 per annum

Approximate cost to company: R802, 254 per annum

Senior Lecturer:

Basic salary Pension/Provident fund: R523, 726 per annum

Approximate cost to company: R679, 055 per annum

Lecturer:

Basic salary Pension/Provident fund: R433, 689 per annum

Approximate cost to company: R567, 661 per annum
