Sustainable Minerals Institute

One of UQ's eight research institutes, the Sustainable Minerals Institute (SMI) consists of some 200 staff and postgraduate students covering the areas of mining and geology, mineral processing, environment and rehabilitation, social responsibility, safety and risk, water and unconventional gas. SMI is industry-focused and consequently works with many leading global resources companies and many small-medium enterprises and suppliers. SMI interacts strongly with governments and community. SMI was founded in 2001 and since its inception has established a reputation as a unique institution for integrated sustainable development research in the resource sector. SMI is a truly global institute with staff and students from around the world. Julius Kruttschnitt Minerals Research Centre (JKMRC)

JKMRC is a world-renowned research and postgraduate education organisation, located at Indooroopilly in Brisbane, approximately 7 km from the main University of Queensland campus. It was established in 1970, and now forms part of the University's Sustainable Minerals Institute.

Newcrest Mining Ltd.

Newcrest is an Australian based gold mining company which engages in exploration, development and mining of copper and gold. They own and operate a number of operations both in Australia and around the world, including: Cadia Valley Operations (NSW); Telfer Mine (WA); Lihir (Papua New Gunea) and Gosowong (Indonesia).

Newcrest Mining Limited and the University of Queensland have recently signed a partnership agreement that paves the way for long-term education, training and research activities. The agreement aims to foster the long-standing relationship between the two organisations and strengthen skills in support of Newcrest's strategic pillars: safety and sustainability; people; operating performance; technology and innovation; and, profitable growth.

The role

Newcrest Mining Ltd. have agreed to fund a full time research position based at the SMI-JKMRC. This position would help to administer and be involved in Newcrest sponsored research projects and play a key role in facilitating technology transfer of research outcomes to Newcrest operational sites.

The person

The successful appointee will have extensive research experience in a research field relevant to mineral processing. This will be complemented by the appointee holding a PhD or Master's degree in a relevant discipline; or an equivalent combination of relevant Industry experience and/or training. Moreover, you will be able to demonstrate: a track record of researching to the highest standards; ability to bring research to publication; well-developed verbal and communication skills; strong collaborative skills; and excellent organisational skills.

In addition, experience in supervising (or co-supervising) RHD students and developed industry liaisons and professional contacts would be desirable.

Salary and Benefits

This is a full-time, fixed term appointment for 2 years at Academic Research Level B. The remuneration package will be in the range $95,771 - $113,728 p.a., plus employer superannuation contributions of up to 17% (total package will be in the range $112,052 - $113,061 p.a.).
