Job Details

Job description

The objectives of the research position are the following:
  • Retrieval of ozone profiles from the lidar measurements at OHP and retrieval of temperature profiles from the off-line wavelength signals.
  • Homogenization of the whole stratospheric ozone profile lidar time series using updated vertical resolution profile.
  • Test of the Optimal Estimation method (OEM) to retrieve the ozone vertical distribution from the lidar signals.
  • Construction of a new tropospheric and stratospheric lidar ozone profile data base from both the combination of initial retrieved profiles and the OEM using all lidar signals on coincident days.
  • Contribution to the ACTRIS Topical Centre for Trace Gases Remote Sensing (CREGARS) in collaboration with the AERIS Data Centre by implementing tools for the test of ozone lidar signals.

The scientist will re-evaluate ozone lidar measurement time series obtained at Haute-Provence Observatory, France, using updated retrieval analysis tool. He/She will test the optimal estimation method to retrieve ozone profile from tropospheric and stratospheric ozone lidar measurements and provide a statistical analysis of the differences between the retrieval methods. The mission includes a contribution to tasks relevant to the involvement of LATMOS ozone lidar measurements in the European ACTRIS infrastructure project.

NDACC (Network for Detection of Atmospheric Composition Change) is an international research network for the surveillance of atmospheric composition. Its objective is to detect changes in chemical composition and temperature and study the interactions between chemistry and climate in the free troposphere, stratosphere and mesosphere. The SNO NDACC-France contributes to NDACC through observations by lidar, sondes and spectrometer instruments. The Strato team of LATMOS has implemented lidar instruments at the Haute-Provence Observatory (OHP - France) for the long-term measurement of ozone vertical distribution.

The candidate

Applicants should hold a PhD and have experience in lidar remote sensing, time series analysis and optimal estimation method.

Furthermore, applicants should have:
  • strong instrumental skill to work with the lidar instrument,
  • analytical skills to work with statistical methods,
  • a good knowledge of Matlab programming,
  • a proven ability to work in a team and network with a range of scientists,
  • good communication skills.
