Job Purpose

To help develop and consolidate a sustainable collaboration and shared vision with our global research partners, by supporting and developing Atrial Fibrillation related research within the NIHR Global Health Research Group (Global AF). Our aim is to strengthen local research capacity in our partner countries in AF research a variety of research methods including qualitative, quantitative, systematic reviews, trials and modelling.

Main Duties
  • Support and mentor our overseas clinical partners to develop research objectives and proposals for joint research, focusing on AF in Low/middle income countries (LMIC's), with assistance of the programme directors
  • Support and mentor our overseas partners in developing and delivering new research projects identified by prioritisation activities with overseas patients and stakeholders. This includes analysis and write up of their projects.
  • Provide regular updates to the programme directors on research progress and any potential difficulties being experienced in the LMIC
  • Take a primary role in the training and mentoring for the qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods aspects of research projects.
  • Disseminate research findings for publication, research seminars, conferences etc
  • Support overseas partners and students on research related work and provide guidance to PhD students where appropriate to the discipline
  • Provide project management/administration of the AF research studies as needed
  • Contribute to the writing of bids for new research funding in the area of AF
  • Contribute to public engagement activities related to the programme of work on AF in primary care populations
  • Advise and support overseas research staff in PPI related activities
  • Oversee the collection of research data for projects within the programme; this may be through a variety of research methods.
  • Provide guidance, as required, to support staff and any collaborators who may be assisting with the research
  • Deal with problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines


Person Specification
  • First degree in health/clinical-related subject and higher degree relevant to the fields of applied health, epidemiology and/or Global health research.
  • Post-doctoral experience of quantitative research from design through to publication
  • Experience of research in the Global setting would be an advantage
  • Experience of supervising and training other researchers, while monitoring progress and tailoring training needs
  • Ability to communicate complex information clearly
  • Experience in quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods epidemiological research and statistical analysis
  • Experience of working with clinicians and populations to collect data
  • Basic understanding of epidemiology, management and monitoring and experience of collaboration with appropriate patient groups
  • Ability to assess resource requirements and use resources effectively
  • Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes
  • Good communication skills (oral and written)
