Job Purpose

This role exists to provide a Digital Learning Designer post within the College of Arts and Law Digital Education Team.

This post forms part of the wider group of 'Birmingham Digital Education (BDE) and the Higher Education Futures Institute (HEFi) within the university but will be based in the College of Arts and Law which consists of five schools each of which has a distinct academic character and target markets and the college has, in total, over 7,000 students.

Line managed by the College Head of Digital Education and Birmingham Digital Education (BDE) Partnership and Development Manager the post holder will support the college's strategic aims and objectives by providing high quality consultative services for academics within the College of Arts and Law, supporting enhancement and developing skills aligned with College priorities.

The post holder will play a leading role in developing capability and capacity for digital education within the College. The role will provide a focus for the support, development and encouragement of the use of technology in learning and teaching across College modules and programmes cultivating productive collaborative relationships with staff and students.

The post holder will provide essential advice and support for digital education. As such, they will consult on effective delivery of teaching and learning using the most appropriate digital tools and pedagogies, with a focus on the university's core digital tools.

With a proven track record of supporting the development and delivery of high quality digital learning experiences, the post holder will play a pivotal role in sharing good practice and the implementation, enhancement and innovation of digital education.

In the College of Arts and Law examples of areas of priority might include: Line management of other team members Assessment and feedback Reporting on the use of canvas via analytics

Person Specification

Essential
  • Formal education to degree level or equivalent is essential and significant relevant experience
  • Detailed knowledge as to how virtual learning environments (Canvas) and other associated systems can be used to support teaching and learning
  • Knowledge of learning design in the context of education.
  • Experience of line managing others, and supporting colleagues in the use of learning technologies.
  • A sound knowledge and understanding of pedagogic and academic issues and processes as applied to Higher Education Experience of creating training programmes and delivering face to face and remote training in the use of learning technologies.
  • Experience of enabling collaborative working in the area of digital education.
  • A firm but diplomatic attitude with the ability to prioritise, negotiate and use one's own judgment when responding to enquiries from staff and students.
  • Previous experience of a customer driven environment.
  • Excellent documentation and report writing skills. Has, and is, able to demonstrate the ability to interpret, analyse and present information.
  • Strong inter-personal and communication skills.
  • Experience of managing projects through to their successful conclusion.

Desirable
  • A relevant postgraduate qualification
  • Previous experience of working in a Higher Education Institution, ideally within digital education or a technical support role.
  • Professional recognition by a body such as the Higher Education Academy or the Association for Learning Technology
  • Significant experience of working with virtual learning environments, ideally with some Canvas experience or similar.
  • Ability to develop professional staff.
  • Experience of creating and maintaining high quality online learning materials.
