Job Details

The position

The Centre for Energy Technology CET at the University of Adelaide delivers innovative technologies for sustainable, secure and affordable energy. Their goal is to help accelerate the society's transition to carbon neutrality. This will include the following:
  • Collaborate with leading industry, government agencies and research organisations to reduce CO2 emissions now!
  • Professional development opportunities and travel funds available
  • Learn from and work closely to leading researchers

The project

The ARENA funded research project, Laser Diagnostics in Non-isothermal Multiphase Flows, focuses on the development and application of non-intrusive optical diagnostics in complex multi-phase flows. This includes the use of Planar Laser Induced Fluorescence (PLIF) and Planar Laser Induced Phosphorescence (PLIP) in particle-laden laminar and turbulent flows, under high flux radiation. The project aims for simultaneous real-time imaging of particles' and gas temperature. The proposed diagnostics are necessary to fully understand heat and mass transfer in these complex flows. Understanding flows that transport fine particles in suspension enables the cost-effective optimisation and scale-up of high temperature thermal energy processes, for example the gasification of biomass with concentrated solar thermal energy. The project suits graduates form Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Physics.

The applicant

Applicants interested in the heat transfer, fluid dynamics, concentrated solar thermal project who hold an Honours degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Physics will be considered favourably. Strong Matlab programming skills (or equivalent) are also desirable. For more information about the entry requirements for Higher Degrees by Research at University of Adelaide, please visit the Adelaide Graduate Centre's website.

Students who meet the University's conditions of admission and wish to be considered for a tuition fee waiver, are expected to have completed a relevant Bachelor degree with First Class Honours, or a Masters degree that contains a significant (and relevant) research component with equivalent academic performance.

Outstanding international applicants who are eligible for admission and have achieved a 1st class Honours grade or masters equivalent may also qualify for a tuition fee waiver as approved by the Faculty.

Remuneration and additional benefits

The selected student will receive a stipend to the value of $27,596 (AUD) per annum for 3 years, in addition to an annual $7,500 (AUD) top up scholarship. The stipend will be awarded on a yearly basis according to satisfactory progress.

Access to authorised travel, professional development training and research project funds will also be available.

To be Eligible you will need to
  • Be studying full-time and onshore in Australia.
  • Fulfil the minimum English language requirement.
  • Be assessed by the Adelaide Graduate Centre as meeting all conditions for admission to the Doctoral program.
  • Be willing to provide your personal details to ARENA by way of a Student Deed Poll
  • Be living in, or able to relocate to, South Australia for the duration of the scholarship
  • Not hold a qualification at the same or at a higher level than the research higher degree program you are undertaking.
  • Not be receiving a living allowance award, scholarship or salary providing a benefit greater than 75% of the RTP Scholarship living allowance rate (AUD$27,596) to undertake the research higher degree program.
