Post description

The Nesting Optimization Group from São Carlos's Mathematical and Computational Sciences Institute of the University of São Paulo (ICMC-USP, located in São Carlos, Brazil) announces a post-doctoral research position in Operations Research. The selected candidate will develop his/her activities under the scope of the project named Uncertainty in Cutting and Packing problems: robust planning and optimized replanning in manufacturing and transportation, supervised by Professor Franklina Maria Bragion de Toledo.

São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) will provide a monthly stipend in the amount of R$ 7,373.10 monthly. Financial support can also be provided to cover transportation expenses as well as relocation to São Carlos. An extra grant is also provided to cover participation in highly relevant conferences and workshops, as well as research trips (limited to 15% of the annual amount of the fellowship). The position is initially for one year, renewable for a second year depending on the candidate performance and resources available. The start date is negotiable, but May 2019 is preferred.

About the project

The post-doc will interact with the nesting optimization group of the University of São Paulo (campus São Carlos) and the nesting optimization group of the São Paulo State University (UNESP - campus Bauru). The post-doc is expected to perform research in the field of two and three-dimensional cutting and packing problems with irregular pieces. New approaches will be developed to tackle cutting and packing problems under uncertainty, namely mathematical models, metaheuristics and heuristics. This includes the development of computational methods and mathematical models properly built to solve the problems. The main application scenario is industries. This is a collaborative position and thus the candidate will be working with other researchers.

Minimum profile

Exceptional scientific performance, vast knowledge of operational research (mathematical programming), especially in two or three-dimensional cutting and packing problems, high level of autonomy. Fluency in object-oriented programming languages such as C++. Proficiency in English language, in writing and speaking. Ability to communicate properly. Candidates must have obtained their PhD in the last 5 years.

Preferred profile

Published papers and work developed in the area of research and/or the application area, experience in solving applied problems.

Application

Please send your application before April 20, 2019 to: fran@icmc.usp.br and isabela@icmc.usp.br . Please indicate post-doctoral application - Operations Research in the subject. Applications should include CV, statement of research interests and two contacts for recommendation letters (only PDF files).
