DIRECTOR: HUMAN RESOURCES (FIVE-YEAR FIXED TERM CONTRACT)

PEROMNES POST LEVEL 3

In pursuit of the ideals of excellence and diversity, the University of Pretoria wishes to invite applications for the following vacancy The University of Pretoria is one of the leading residential and research universities in South Africa and a university of choice for academically talented students. The Director will be a member of the extended University Management Team and will report to a member of the Executive.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The person appointed in this position will take responsibility for the oversight, co-ordination and operational management of the Human Resources (HR) function at the University, which resides in the Department of Human Resources and includes:
  • specialist services, including organisational development, talent management, succession and career management, orientation and induction, performance management, training and development, wellness and remuneration and reward;
  • employment relations;
  • HR partnerships and services, including the recruitment, selection and appointment processes, the provision of first-line services, advice on and management of appointments, confirmations, promotions, terminations, remuneration and the granting of benefits to specific operational units, such as faculties and support service clusters;
  • HR information system management;
  • the development of leadership in HR practices and objectives to provide an employee-oriented, high-performance culture with the emphasis on empowerment, quality, productivity and achievement of the institutional goals;
  • responsibility for all HR-related policy development and maintenance;
  • ensuring the implementation of and compliance with the University's HR policies;
  • advising relevant stakeholders on HR issues;
  • preparing and overseeing the annual operational budget of the Department of Human Resources; and
  • liaising with faculties and support service departments, and co-ordinating operations relating to HR matters through service-level agreements where required.


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • A master's or honours degree in Industrial Psychology / Human Resources Management or a related field;
  • A master's degree and a minimum of ten years' HR management experience, five of which should have been in a senior role in a large organisation / institution;
  • An honours qualification and a minimum of twelve years' HR management experience, five of which should have been in a senior role in a large organisation / institution;
  • A thorough understanding of the HR development principles that support the University's 2025 Vision;
  • Exposure to and in-depth knowledge and experience of:
    • relevant legislation and regulatory and reporting requirements; and
    • strategic and operational management in the key functions associated with this position.


REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):
  • Ability to liaise and negotiate at a senior level;
  • Ability to command respect and credibility and consistently display high levels of personal integrity and ethical standards;
  • Sensitivity to and the ability to manage diversity in both the internal and external environment;
  • Change management skills;
  • Strategic, administrative and operational management skills;
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Excellent computer and information literacy skills.


ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:
  • Managerial experience at an institution of higher learning; and
  • A thorough understanding of the higher education sector and environment, both nationally and internationally.

The all-inclusive remuneration package for this contract position will be commensurate with the incumbent's level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines.
