Job Details

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a suitable candidate to join the Lifecourse Musculoskeletal Group at the MRC Lifecourse Epidemiology Unit (MRCLEU), University of Southampton, as an NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer in Rheumatology.

The post is 50% academic at the MRCLEU and 50% clinical training as a Specialist Registrar in Rheumatology on the Wessex Rheumatology Specialist Training Programme. The post-holder will become an integral part of MRCLEU, supervised by Profs Harvey and Cooper, with epigenetic expertise from Prof Karen Lillycrop (Institute for Developmental Sciences, UoS). MRCLEU work has established the importance of environmental exposures, such as nutrition in utero and early postnatal life, and influences on accrual/loss of bone and muscle mass in older age, for the risk of osteoporotic fracture in later life. This work has also demonstrated key underlying mechanisms, with epigenetic marks clearly implicated. The post-holder will pursue this research theme, using internationally leading resources such as the Southampton Women's Survey, MAVIDOS and SPRING Pregnancy vitamin D trials and Hertfordshire Ageing Cohort, to discover novel mechanisms related to musculoskeletal health across the lifecourse, from in utero into older age, and incorporating new opportunities to study effects of reproduction, and underlying mechanisms, on skeletal health in the menopausal transition. The research programme will therefore integrate findings across epidemiology and mechanistic investigations and inform novel approaches to osteoporosis risk assessment, mechanisms of bone development, and potential new targets for pharmacological interventions aimed at improving bone mass.

In this post-doctoral role, the successful candidate will have experience of working in the lifecourse setting with mother-offspring cohorts, a proven track record of high quality original research publications and ideally external funding, the ability to work well in a multidisciplinary, multi-professional team, and to synthesize research findings across clinical epidemiology, intervention trials, and mechanistic investigations. Clinically they will have, or be eligible for, a Rheumatology NTN.

The MRC Lifecourse Epidemiology Unit, University of Southampton, is at the global forefront of research into risk factors for chronic musculoskeletal and metabolic diseases through life. The Lifecourse Musculoskeletal Theme, led by Professors Cooper, Harvey and Dennison, provides a world-leading clinical academic environment. The Unit produced over 2000 publications in the last 15 years, and the director, Professor Cooper, has been consistently listed in the top 1% of highly cited medical researchers worldwide. The unit has an enviable track record of doctoral and post-doctoral clinical and non-clinical academic training, nurturing trainees through to senior academic or clinical/academic positions.

Clinical training will be undertaken 0.5fte as a Specialist Registrar on the Wessex Rheumatology Specialist Training Programme. The aim of the programme is to produce doctors who have the skill set to work effectively as Consultant Rheumatologists in the current NHS, and who have had the opportunity to develop specific areas of interest and expertise in their training that further enhance their job satisfaction, and make them competitive at appointment interviews. Wessex trainees have an excellent track record in securing consultant posts. All benefit from an excellent training in all aspects of Rheumatology, including: connective tissue disease, inflammatory arthritis, metabolic bone disease and paediatric rheumatology, and many take up opportunities in academic rheumatology.
