Job Purpose

Applications are invited for a full time Clinical Senior Lecturer (Teaching Focussed) in Ophthalmology to work in the Institute of Clinical Sciences, University of Birmingham but also based in the Academic Unit of Ophthalmology, Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre, Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust. The Post Holder will be expected to have Inflammatory Eye Disease as their clinical sub-specialty interest.

Teaching duties
  • Teach and examine courses at a range of levels including undergraduate and postgraduate
  • Plan and review own teaching approaches and act as a mentor to encourage others to do the same
  • Where appropriate, undertake and develop the full range of responsibilities in relation to module leading, supervision, marking and examining
  • Use appropriate approaches to learning and teaching in their field
  • Disseminate appropriate practices through suitable media, such as Canvas.
  • Develop and deliver teaching and learning activities, support curriculum change and innovation relevant to all clinical settings
  • Contribute to curriculum improvement through the development of teaching and learning resources aligned to the MBChB programme objectives
  • Participate in course and curriculum evaluation
  • Provide OSCE support including question writing, emendation, examining and benchmarking activities
  • Devise and supervise projects, student dissertations and practical work.


Clinical duties

The appointee will be given an Honorary Consultant contract at the Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre, Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust. The full-time job plan will comprise 10 Programmed Activities (PAs), 5 PAs will be University activity and 5 PAs NHS Clinical activity. The NHS PAs will comprise 4 Direct Clinical Contact PAs and 1 Supporting Programmed Activity (SPA). There will be no surgical sessions and the appointee will not be part of the on-call rota. An indicative job plan for the Clinical PAs is as follows:
  • Weekly NHS clinics 3.5 (annualised over 42 weeks = 147 clinics)
  • Clinical administration 0.5
  • Supporting Professional Activities 1.0
  • Total Clinical Activity 5.0 PAs


Person Specification

Qualifications:
  • Entry on the Specialist Register in Ophthalmology (or within 3 months)
  • Higher Degree (MD/PhD)
  • Higher educational qualification (e.g. PGCHE, FHEA)


Clinical Experience:
  • Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining CCT in Surgical/Medical Ophthalmology
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for the management of general ophthalmology
  • Completed fellowship or specialist training in Inflammatory Eye Disease.
  • Professional and Multi-disciplinary team working:
  • Ability to work well with colleagues and within a team.
  • Management and Administrative Experience: • Ability to organise and prioritise workload effectively
  • Ability to plan strategically and to exercise sound judgements when faced with conflicting pressures.
  • Ability to motivate and develop the multi-disciplinary team, balancing departmental and personal objectives.
  • Clinical Effectiveness
  • Experience of conducting clinical audit
  • Ability to use the evidence base and clinical audit to support decision-making.


Teaching and Training experience:
  • Formal training in teaching/education
  • Evidence of successful and sustained use of a range of appropriate teaching methods and assessment strategies that promote high quality learning
  • Evidence of significant and sustained contribution to one or more of the following: strategic development of new programmes, approaches to learning, the development of learning resources
  • Evidence of high quality and sustained contributions to fostering excellence in teaching activities more widely
  • Evidence of mentoring and expert advice which develops the skills of colleagues in teaching and in fostering learning
  • Evidence of experience and leadership in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching of ophthalmology
  • Leadership in course management and delivery, either at undergraduate or postgraduate level
  • Ability to teach clinical skills to medical and nursing staff and other disciplines.
  • The ability to appraise junior doctors and other staff.
  • Significant contribution to the pedagogical knowledge base of the subject that advances teaching through the enhancement of practice, the development of teaching resources and/ or through practice-based research
  • Leadership on the management and the development of approaches to teaching and learning that are innovative to subject area or institution.
  • Research, Innovation and Service Improvement Experience:
  • Evidence of having undertaken original research
  • Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems
  • An awareness of current specialty developments, initiatives and issues.
  • Publications in relevant peer-reviewed journals in the last five years.
  • Knowledge and experience of the application of information technology to Ophthalmology.
