Work to be performed by the postdoctoral fellow will include:
We are looking for a creative, qualified and motivated postdoctorate-level young scientist, in the context of the ongoing ANR-funded collaborative research project PESTIPOND (Role of ponds in the transfer and impact of pesticides in surface waters of the critical zone in agricultural environments) coordinated by LHyGeS research unit, University of Strasbourg-CNRS.
The project involves (i) the acquisition of hydrochemical and stable isotope data (compound-specific isotope analysis) from stormwater wetland collecting runoff from agricultural catchment; (ii) the development of in situ investigation of pesticide transformation at the water-sediment interface; (iii) the mechanistic interpretation and numerical modelling of pesticide dissipation in wetland systems. The successful candidate will help develop conceptual approaches and new integrative experimental tools to monitor and understand transformation processes of pesticides at the water-sediment interface.
The position is for two years. We offer salary and social benefits according to French public sector regulations.
Closing date for applications is April 31, 2019. Preferred starting period will be between September, 2019 and end of October, 2019.
The Laboratory of Hydrology and Geochemistry (LHyGeS, UMR 7517 CNRS; https://lhyges.unistra.fr ) focuses on flow and transport in continental hydrological systems. Research activities associate experimental and isotopic biogeochemistry with hydrology to understand processes at different scales and to develop transport models. LHyGeS conducts lab- and field-scale experiments to study transport of water and contaminants, and the team focuses on the transformation of pollutants using compound-specific isotope analysis (CSIA) in catchments, soils, and aquifers. Research at University of Strasbourg covers all areas of science, and encourages interdisciplinary and international collaborations. Located at the heart of Europe in a trinational region of dynamic economic activity, Strasbourg is a pioneer city in terms of environmental awareness in France, and a very pleasant place to live in.
Applications will require:
- Experimental work on pesticide transformation monitoring in artificial (stormwater) wetlands, sampling approaches and chemical analyses
- Application of methods for stable isotope analysis of pesticides in wetland water and sediment
- Application of numerical modelling to investigate pesticide dissipation processes in wetlands
- Working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team and with external partners
- Preparing peer-reviewed scientific publications and presentations for scientific conferences.

Applications will require:
- A PhD degree in contaminant biogeochemistry and/or environmental chemistry within the last five years
- A corresponding publication record in peer-reviewed journals
- Experience in microbiology and analytical chemistry
- Good command of the English language (written and oral)
- Communication skills and an ability to work in an interdisciplinary team with scientists, engineers, and technicians
- A working knowledge on application of numerical modelling approaches, pollutant transformation, stable isotope analysis, and/or CSIA as well as an international research experience, will be additional assets.
