Applications are invited for a full time PhD studentship in the School of Metallurgy and Materials at the University of Birmingham. The project is supported by Culham Centre for Fusion Energy (CCFE), who will provide both industrial supervision and access to research facilities.

Nuclear fusion is a prospective option for generating cleaner energy. To make fusion reactors a viable reality, the development of fusion materials, which need to withstand very harsh environment, is of primary importance. Vanadium alloys are considered as attractive structural materials for the liquid Li blanket of a demonstration fusion reactor, because of their low activation, good levels of high-temperature mechanical properties and irradiation tolerance. In this project, you will develop novel Vanadium-based alloys with increased performance optimized for fusion applications. You will characterize the developed alloys via state-of-the-art approaches including electron microscopy, synchrotron X-ray based in situ techniques and high temperature mechanical testing. The successful applicant must hold a first degree (minimum upper second class) in Materials Science, Physics, Mechanical Engineering or related discipline. A Master's level qualification is desirable but not essential. The University of Birmingham English language requirements apply where applicable.

Funding Notes

Successful applicants will receive an annual tax free stipend of £15,600 plus payment of their full time home/EU tuition fees for a period of 48 months.
