Job Purpose

The post holder will join a small engineering team within the Gravitational Wave Group, which:
  • Designs and produces bespoke and novel instrumentation, used within the groups internal research activities, and in support of its collaborative contributions to the construction of detectors such as Advanced LIGO.
  • Supports the groups experimental activities by assisting as required in the design, construction, operation and maintenance of laboratory based experimentation.


Person Specification

The preferred candidate must have:
  • A minimum of an HNC in electronics Engineering or related discipline.
  • Keen interest in electronics, and aptitude for problem solving.
  • Hands on experience of building electronic systems to print, including soldering, wiring, mechanical assembly and testing, and be willing to learn new skills as required. Experience of using standard electronics laboratory test and measurement equipment.
  • Good communication skills and be capable of working both autonomously or as part of a team.
  • Some experience of creating software either by text based (eg C) or graphical programming techniques.
  • Experience of printed circuit board design.
  • Experience of cleanroom working and working practices.
  • Experience of working with systems that operate in high vacuum
  • Good documentation and recording skills including use of standard Microsoft Office tools.
  • Good personal organisation and time management skills.
