The Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH) is a world-leading institute in global health with a particular focus on low- and middle-income countries. Your position

Within a new project led by PATH, Swiss TPH is in charge of a large multi-country impact and operational research study on data for Fever Management (DFM) so to accelerate availability, adoption and scale-up of tools to identify severe disease and decrease mortality in children under five. Non-invasive devices such as pulse oximeters (POX), which measure heart rate and oxygen saturation in the blood, provide objective patient information that improve a health care worker's ability to diagnose severe disease. Electronic decision support tools can assist health workers in processing patient information and symptoms through digital devices or applications for improved diagnosis.
  • Assure project management including financial aspects and risk management
  • Provide technical, managerial and administrative support to the "Data for Fever Management (DFM)" in particular to project planning and implementation (including workplans, budget elaboration and tracking budget execution)
  • Lead on the development of the research design of the impact study and operational research (conception of trial structure, including monitoring plan, technical input on clinical aspects etc.) as well as ethics and regulatory requirements
  • Oversee activities relating to electronic decision support tools such as software adaptation, validation and deployment etc.
  • Coordinate activities with research sites in five countries in Africa (Kenya, Senegal, Tanzania) and Asia (India, Myanmar) and regularly communicate with other consortium partners, namely PATH, national research partners, MoHs and other relevant entities
  • Submit protocols for ethical review and lead communication with ethical and regulatory bodies
  • Coordinate trial monitoring and oversight activities
  • Lead data analysis and write up of study findings
  • Lead the implementation of project's monitoring and evaluation framework (including tracking of the theory of change) and establish progress reports and to contribute to the overall reporting of PATH to UNITAID


Your profile
  • Advanced university degree in epidemiology, public health or a related field
  • At least 10 years of international experience working on public health and development issues, including in LMIC contexts
  • Demonstrated experience with carrying out operational/implementation studies/research independently. Specific experience in large scale health service research are an asset
  • Experienced in field team management, quantitative and qualitative data collection, data management, data analysis and report writing
  • Knowledge and expertise in electronic decision support tools within primary health care settings
  • At least 3 years of leadership experience and human resource management
  • Empowerment of employees by transparent communication, coaching and enabling
  • Competence to create an atmosphere of mutual trust and respect
  • Experience of interacting with clients from the private and public sector
  • Language skills: the candidate has to be fluent in English. French would be an asset
  • Willingness to travel abroad frequently (6 to 8 weeks per year to study countries)
  • Strong spirit of team work and initiative, and ability to work with professionals in multi-cultural context
  • Effective negotiation, conflict management and communication skills
  • Ability to take responsibility and leadership in a complex cross-cutting department with internal and external project partners
