In parallel we are building a new Life Sciences Campus in Edgbaston, and have recently opened the Edgbaston Park Hotel and Conference Centre.

We are looking for a talented and committed individual to join Legal Services, which is one of the University's Professional Services and which is comprised of in-house solicitors' and support staff. We advise Academic Units and other Professional Services within the University and liaise with external organisations and panel solicitors as required. The Director reports directly to the Registrar and Secretary of the University, and is a member of the University's Senior Officers' team and University's Leadership

This employment paralegal role (with some secretarial duties) is an important role to primarily support the two employment solicitors with their work. You will facilitate the smooth running of Legal Services by providing highly confidential, high quality paralegal and secretarial services to Legal Services.

The post holder will enjoy an interesting and varied workload and gain exposure to a wide range of issues across the University.

Person Specification

Essential
  • Previous legal secretary, paralegal or legal executive experience, is required preferably in employment law or in a related area, such as civil litigation or contract law
  • Educated to A-level standard (or equivalent) plus a good GCSE standard in Maths and English.
  • Excellent organisational skills that support an ability to work with a high degree of attention to detail whilst at the same time productively managing a large volume of work to stretching targets in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with colleagues at all levels and provide exemplary customer service.
  • Excellent written communication skills, with particular attention to accurate spelling, grammar and punctuation and presentation of documents.


Desirable
  • Experience gained in the Higher Education Sector
  • Member of Chartered Institute for Legal Executives with completion of CILex employment law unit
  • The ability to work with initiative, to take decisions and think creatively and laterally.
  • Flexible attitude to work such as a willingness to act appropriately to meet unexpected demands, including the ability to prioritise own work under pressure.
  • Good all round IT skills, including competence with all aspects of MS Office, email, the internet and databases.
  • Inquisitive and sharp mind coupled with a demonstrable aptitude for research, analytical work and logical and lateral thinking.
  • The ability to work calmly, effectively and with a sense of humour, both in a team and independently, and to remain cheerful in times of pressure.
