The Sutton Trust is seeking a new Director of Research Advocacy and Communications. This is a pivotal senior role at this ground-breaking organisation, communicating the impact of its vital work, influencing policy-makers, the media and a wide range of stakeholders, and shaping its highly influential research output.

The Sutton Trust is the UK’s leading foundation dedicated to improving social mobility. Founded by Sir Peter Lampl in 1997, the Trust delivers programmes to 5,000 young people each year across the country, rigorous research into the issues of low social mobility and educational disadvantage, and policy advocacy to affect systemic change. The Trust gives opportunities to young people from low and moderate-income backgrounds to improve their chances of accessing top universities and the professions. It seeks to ensure young people reach their potential, regardless of their background, school or where they live.

The Trust’s reputation and public profile is unparalleled in schools and universities, in the national media and in government, enabling it to catapult issues into mainstream public debate. The Trust commands national reach and an excellent reputation with students and teachers in state secondary schools and colleges across the country.

Reporting to the CEO Dr Lee Elliot Major the post holder will be a member of The Sutton Trust’s senior leadership and lead a small, high-performing team. The successful candidate will direct an integrated research, policy and communications programme, which shapes the national conversation and news agenda, advancing the dialogue on social mobility as well as the reputation of The Trust.

You will have a strong commitment to educational equality and social mobility; a significant track record of leadership of professional strategic communications, including experience leading traditional and social media strategies, a clear understanding of how to use research data effectively to support communications and a track record in influencing or developing public policy. We seek a confident, positive and creative leader with the ability to motivate and inspire stakeholders, colleagues, staff and peers.

We are committed to ensuring equality of opportunity for all. We strongly encourage individuals from all backgrounds to apply for this role.
