RESPONSIBILITIES:

The incumbent will be responsible for:

  • The strategic, academic and operational management of the Department;
  • Promoting the Department’s research profile;
  • Promoting good academic education and professional training within a hybrid learning approach;
  • Playing an active role as an academic leader of the discipline at national and international levels;
  • Fundraising for departmental activities.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Senior Lecturer:

  • A PhD degree in Health Sciences or equivalent;
  • Five accredited publications;
  • At least two completed supervised postgraduate students;
  • Three years’ teaching experience in Health Sciences Skills Lab training and assessment, including management experience.

Associate Professor:

  • A PhD degree in Health Sciences or equivalent;
  • 18 accredited publications, some recent and at least 50% in ISI journals;
  • Evidence of completed Masters and PhD students supervision, at least four masters and current doctoral supervision;
  • Membership of international bodies;
  • Five years’ teaching experience in Health Sciences Skills Lab training and assessments including management experience.

 

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

  • A proven research and publication record and peer recognition;
  • A proven postgraduate supervision track record;
  • Proven academic capabilities (training, research, service and community engagement);
  • Academic status and international recognition in health sciences education;
  • Strong leadership and communication skills.

 

ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

  • Managerial experience at a tertiary institution;
  • A strong research record in one of the Department’s research specialisation fields;
  • NRF rating;
  • Formal training in education, leadership and/or management;
  • Experience in high-level liaison with internal and external stakeholders and professional boards;
  • Experience in electronic supported learning and assessment;
  • Experience in resource mobilisation including fundraising.

 

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
