Lecturer in Mandarin Chinese

Five-year contract position

An exciting opportunity exists at Stellenbosch University in South Africa, within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, for a dynamic person to join this fast-growing section of the Department of Modern Foreign Languages.

All foreign language programmes are based on an intercultural and communicative approach and are designed to provide a thorough competence in the spoken and written form of the target language.

Duties

  • Teaching Mandarin language, culture and literature at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level; 
  • Developing course material and assessment opportunities for academic and short courses; 
  • Performing administrative and organisational functions as required by the Department; 
  • Student development; 
  • Liaising with cultural representatives of countries where Mandarin is spoken; 
  • Liaising with the Centre for Chinese Studies.

 

Job Requirements

  • A Master's Degree or equivalent qualification in teaching Mandarin as a foreign language; 
  • Experience in teaching Mandarin as a foreign language; 
  • Proven ability to develop new course material; 
  • Ability to function within a team; 
  • Ability to communicate fluently in Mandarin and in English.

 

Recommendation

  • Experience in teaching Mandarin as a foreign language in a foreign context; 
  • Mandarin mother tongue speaker; 
  • Experience in using technology for language learning; 
  • Cultural skills such as poetry, calligraphy, or music.
