The Data Strategy, Intelligence, and Partnerships team is a data sciences unit within the Center for Observational and Real-world Evidence (CORE). The team embraces the values of integrity, execution and an entrepreneurial spirit. We have three central functions: 1) to build external real-world data (RWD) and technology focused partnerships (2) to be a business development arm that conducts due diligence and liaises with a variety of healthcare stakeholders to obtain access to healthcare data, analytics and research capabilities (3) to build internal capabilities and expertise that realizes the full value of our real world data and technology assets. Our strategic alliances focus on big data partnerships that can help answer many of Merck’s needs for better understanding a variety of diseases and enabling scientific research, product development and drug launch.

The candidate filling this position will be working in a multi-faceted, cross-functional environment both externally with vendors and clients, and internally with Merck leaders. Ideal candidates should be capable of conducting due diligence and identifying opportunities in technology & healthcare data, managing a portfolio of relationships/partnerships, communication, project management and consensus building. Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

- Identify, evaluate and partner with novel health data and technology opportunities to generate differentiated research and real world evidence in a variety of disease areas (e.g. using claims and EMR data)
- Work cross-functionally across the enterprise to understand and support the use of real world data assets (EMR, claims, phenotypic data, etc) and to enhance research evidence generation
- Lead the build out of an internal data lab and incubator
- Advance a data science strategy, culture and capabilities within CORE and the broader enterprise by working across technical and strategic groups in both the commercial and R&D organization
- Coordinating and executing day to day activities with external partner and internal stakeholders
- Drive a coordinated approach to leverage the data and technology assets across the company
- Demonstrate compelling business cases and establish performance metrics for different partnerships/ventures
- Facilitate execution of contracts, budget negotiations and research programs with partner organizations
- Ensure approaches are in full compliance with all legal, compliance and regulatory requirements
- Develop communications for internal and external engagements

Qualifications

Education:

- Master’s or PhD degree in business, economics, epidemiology, genetics, health services research, informatics, biostatistics, computer science, engineering, public health, policy, or a related discipline.

Required:

- Minimum of 2 years of healthcare domain knowledge in life sciences, health data, health IT and/or the payor marketplace
- Entrepreneurial and intellectual curiosity in the application of observational health data
- Demonstrated excellence in interpersonal communication (written and oral) with superb listening skills
- Results-oriented in project management, communication, and relationship building to influence decision making
- Ability to lead without direct authority over a continuum of stakeholders at varying levels
- Ability to champion the best ideas across disease/therapeutic areas around building real world data/big data capabilities and partnerships, and persuade decision makers to achieve the optimal outcome
- Provide a flexible mindset with the ability to routinely predict, identify, generate and evaluate alternatives best suited to business needs
- Established ability to manage multiple projects and deliverables and the ability to effectively execute in complex large organizations
- Ability to collaborate in team environment with diverse talent and culture
- Proven flexibility to accommodate changing situations in support of departmental and divisional goals
- Ability to collaborate effectively and articulate clear organizational vision

Preferred:

- Experience in applying real-world healthcare data in a health-related industry, academic or research setting.
- Working knowledge of leading-edge practices, techniques, and/or technologies within Informatics and related disciplines (such as machine learning)
- Experience working with longitudinal real world data assets (e.g., claims, electronic medical records, genomic data, consumer data, social media data)
- Experience with data analysis or data management along with familiarity of big data, analytics and/or data mining environments; data science experience and/or exposure would be a big plus
- Understanding of business processes in one or more of discovery, research, clinical, commercial, regulatory or safety domains
- An understanding of the payment reform or payer-provider structures would be a big plus
