The Merck Research Laboratories (MRL) Postdoctoral Research Fellow Program aims to be a best-in-industry program for industrial postdoctoral researchers, designed to provide you with an academic focus in a commercial environment. Position Overview:

As a postdoctoral fellow in the MRL Analytical Research and Development you will work with a highly collaborative team of scientists utilizing state of the art equipment and instrumentation to lead the “next generation” of elemental analysis capabilities for pharmaceutical research investigations. The aim is to develop and implement elemental analysis tools and methodologies including elemental speciation, absolute quantification of biomolecules, elemental mapping/imaging, and high throughput metal sensors to aid in the pharmaceutical pathway.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

- Design and carry out quantitative elemental speciation analysis to support pharmaceutical reaction pathways, intermediates, and purification

- Employ elemental analysis for the absolute quantification of biomolecule targets, via liquid chromatography ICP-MS

- Utilize elemental mapping and imagining techniques for the direct characterization of solid material, by laser ablation ICP-MS

- Develop chromogenic and fluorogenic molecular sensors for high throughput metal analysis, as a means to detect target ions of interest

- Data interpretations, prepare publications and presentation of results

Qualifications

Education Minimum Requirement:

- PhD with 3 years or less of postdoctoral experience or met all the requirements for a PhD by May 2017

Required Experience and Skills:

- Background in elemental analysis by ICP-MS

- Ability to design experiments, interpret and track results, and utilize this information to enable method development

- Innovative, creative, and highly motivated

- Track record of scientific contributions (including peer-reviewed manuscripts), and strong verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills

Preferred Experience and Skills:

- Thorough understanding of chromatographic theory with hands-on experience in elemental speciation for elemental species and/or biological molecules

- In-depth knowledge of in laser ablation and/or LIBS, and their applications for elemental mapping and imagining

- Experience in the development of chemical sensors for metal analysis
