Description
Merck & Co., Inc. Kenilworth, N.J., U.S.A. known as Merck in the United States and Canada, is a global health care leader with a diversified portfolio of prescription medicines, vaccines and animal health products. Today, we are building a new kind of healthcare company – one that is ready to help create a healthier future for all of us.
Our ability to excel depends on the integrity, knowledge, imagination, skill, diversity and teamwork of an individual like you. To this end, we strive to create an environment of mutual respect, encouragement and teamwork. As part of our global team, you’ll have the opportunity to collaborate with talented and dedicated colleagues while developing and expanding your career.
Be a part of the legacy: MRL Postdoctoral Research Fellow Program
The Merck Research Laboratories (MRL) Postdoctoral Research Fellow Program aims to be a best-in-industry program for industrial postdoctoral researchers, designed to provide you with an academic focus in a commercial environment. With the resources, reach, and expertise of a large pharmaceutical company, postdoctoral researchers will be positioned to excel in an institution committed to breakthrough innovation in research and discovery.
Position Overview:
The successful postdoctoral research fellow will be responsible for the design, synthesis, purification and characterization of medium ring sized macrocyclic molecules. In this role, the incumbent will engage in problem solving specifically focusing on methodology development and evaluation of macrocycles towards understanding the interplay between physicochemical properties and cell permeability. The candidate will collaborate across disciplines within MRL. Additionally, the research fellow will improve existing workflows for macrocycle design and evaluation and incorporate automation where appropriate. The incumbent will interact with the external scientific community, including working closely with peptide expert Prof. Bradley Pentelute (MIT), and make direct contributions to Merck’s external reputation through publications and conference presentations. The successful candidate must have excellent interpersonal, cross functional collaboration and communication skills.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Leading the design, synthesis (solution/solid phase; flow chemistry), and characterization of novel macrocycles (cyclic peptides and cyclic peptoids)
- Collaborate closely with colleagues in computational chemistry and peptide modality chemistry groups to design molecules which may exhibit improved physiochemical properties
- Utilize state-of-the-art chemistry techniques and equipment to aid in the synthesis, isolation and identification of reaction products and by-products
- Develop empirical methods to measure then analyze the cell permeability of macrocycles
- Presentation of ideas and results, including issues & possible solutions, at project team or departmental meetings
- Executing high-throughput experimentation techniques to improve chemistry performance to identify new optimal chemistry methods towards the synthesis of macrocycles
- Development of routes to facilitate the synthesis of chemical libraries of the macrocycles
Qualifications
Education:
- PhD in organic or bio organic chemistry with 3 years or less postdoctoral experience or met all the requirements for a PhD by May 2017
Required:
- Experience of all techniques associated with a modern chemistry laboratory, including the synthesis, purification and characterization of chemical compounds on small and medium scale utilizing HPLC, MS and biophysical methods
- Strong problem solving and troubleshooting skills
- Proven ability to independently design experiments, interpret data and incorporate data into new experimental designs leading to successful experimental outcomes
- Demonstrates independent, scientifically-directed and innovative thinking and mines scientific literature and databases where appropriate
- Functions well within multidisciplinary teams and possess outstanding oral and written communication skills
Preferred:
- Experience in the utilization of flow chemistry or solid phase synthesis possibly within the area of synthesis of cyclic peptides or cyclic peptoids
- Strong history of publication in peer-reviewed journals
- Demonstrated aptitude for learning/adopting new software platforms and technologies
- Anticipates the need for contingencies and develops alternative strategies
