LECTURER / SENIOR LECTURER: PIG HEALTH VETERINARIAN (ONE POST)

The Department seeks an experienced veterinarian to join our dynamic team tasked with enhancing animal productivity and welfare, community and environmental health. This person will focus on teaching and research in pig health and production of both developing and commercial farmers.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The successful candidate will actively participate in the following areas:

  • Teaching and practical training of undergraduate and postgraduate veterinary and veterinary nursing students, primarily in Porcine Production and Medicine, secondarily providing periodic support in general farm animal clinical work as required. The successful candidate will be expected to actively recruit additional porcine clientele to fulfil this mandate;
  • Network with relevant stakeholders in the porcine industry;
  • Postgraduate training and supervision for candidates appointed at the senior lecturer level;
  • Research and publications in scientific journals;
  • Administrative activities and other duties as delegated by the Head of Department;
  • Rendering service to commercial and developing farmers and to the veterinary profession and research community;
  • Participating in providing a 24-hour service;
  • Academic self-development as appropriate to the individual’s academic career.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Lecturer:

  • A BVSc or BVMCh degree or an equivalent veterinary qualification;
  • MSc or equivalent postgraduate degree at the time of appointment or within one year;
  • Registration as a Veterinarian with SAVC, or eligible for immediate registration;
  • Two years’ appropriate veterinary experience including clinical and consultancy work with pigs and general farm animal veterinary exposure.


Senior Lecturer:

  • A BVSc or BVMCh degree or an equivalent veterinary qualification;
  • An appropriate MMedVet degree and/or equivalent specialty board certification and/or a PhD in a relevant area;
  • Registration with the SAVC as a specialist in porcine health or eligibility for registration;
  • Five years’ appropriate veterinary experience including porcine clinical and management consulting experience, and general farm animal veterinary exposure.

 

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

  • Proven skills in individual patient and herd- or population-level problem investigation, management interventions and consultation;
  • Proven competence in economic basis of decision-making in animal health;
  • Proven knowledge of the important veterinary aspects of porcine health and production in southern Africa;
  • Research interest appropriate to the position;
  • Commitment to obtain further a postgraduate qualification in a reasonable time;
  • Good language and communication skills (written and verbal comprehension and verbal expression);
  • Generic teaching competence such as communication and presentation skills;
  • Computer skills for presentation, word-processing, spreadsheets, communication and electronic networking.

 

ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

  • Teaching experience appropriate to the tertiary environment;
  • An established professional network within the pig industry and professional environment;
  • Experience in domestic ruminant clinical work, and in other intensive animal production systems (poultry, feedlots, other).

 

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED medical aid scheme and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
