The Catalysis Lead, Process Research & Development, is responsible for managing the implementation of novel catalytic chemistry and processing technologies to ensure the design and development of robust, sustainable and efficient Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API) manufacturing processes.

The Catalysis Lead reports to the Executive Director, Process Research & Development in the Merck Research Laboratories organization. This role requires laboratory chemistry execution using high throughput experimentation and analysis tools in addition to direct supervision of approximately 5 scientists who work closely within multidisciplinary teams comprised of chemical engineers, analytical chemists and synthetic organic chemists. The Catalysis Lead is responsible advancing an internal culture of scientific excellence, identifying emerging trends and in many cases defining the field based on fundamental mechanistic principles. The Catalysis lead ensures that predictive chemistry platforms are routinely used in reaction design and optimization.

Critical tasks involve enabling new chemical transformations and influencing route design. The team managed by the role also supports API campaigns at lab, pilot and manufacturing scale. Proactive resource planning, project prioritization , risk assessment strategies and budget management are necessary.

The incumbent is responsible for the recruiting, appraisal and development of personnel under his/her supervision. The Catalysis Lead selects, trains, and recommends transfers, merit increases, promotions, and closures of personnel under his/her direction within the framework of Company policy.

The Catalysis Lead recommends, and maintains external contracts for Process Research & Development, including collaborations, grants, fellowships, and consultants in expressed fields of activity. Interaction with the international academic community is expected.

Qualifications

Education Minimum Requirement:

- Ph.D. in chemistry, chemical engineering or related field is required

Required Experience and Skills:

- A minimum of 4 years drug development experience.

- Demonstrated ability in leading cross-functional groups.

- Track record and commitment to employee development/retention.

- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills.

- An understanding of preclinical and clinical development.

- Strength in delivering results on firm deadlines.

- Internationally recognized in academia and industry with a demonstrated history of high impact publications and invited presentations.
