Established in 2003, QBI (http://www.qbi.uq.edu.au) is housed on the St Lucia campus of UQ. It is home to more than 450 staff and students, including 41 group leaders, working across a range of disciplines, who are focused on discovering the fundamental mechanisms that regulate brain development and function in health and disease. 

Over the past decade QBI has become known as one of the world's leading neuroscience research institutes. It played a key role in contributing to UQ attaining the highest possible score of 5 for neuroscience, in the 2010, 2012 and 2015 Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) reviews, one of only two universities in Australia to achieve this.

The role

The Media Preparation Assistant will be responsible for the production of tissue culture media, fly food, agar plates and other media solutions required by the Institute, and testing the quality of that media.This is a Broad-banded HEW Level 4/5 role - level of appointment will be commensurate with qualifications, skills and experience.

The person

Applicants should possess a certificate level qualification with relevant work experience (HEW 4) or a BSc in Biology or Chemistry with subsequent relevant experience (HEW 5) or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and or education/training. Experience in a laboratory environment, with knowledge or experience in media production and tissue culture is required.  In addition to knowledge or experience using database and stock management systems as well as demonstrated experience or knowledge in making complex chemical solutions. Applicants should also possess excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to communicate effectively with researchers and work collaboratively in a team environment.

Remuneration

This is a part-time (3 day per week), 12 month fixed term appointment at Broadband HEW Level 4/5. Level of appointment will be commensurate with qualifications, skills and experience. The remuneration package will be in the range of $34,619.18 - $36,877.21 p.a (HEW 4); or $37,629.78 - $42,145.01 (HEW 5) p.a., plus employer superannuation contributions of up to 17% total package will be in the range $40,504.44 - $43,146.33 p.a (HEW 4) or; $44,026.84 - $49,309.66 p.a. (HEW 5).
