Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences

School of Medical Sciences

Department of Anatomy and Medical Imaging

The Department of Anatomy and Medical Imaging is one of eight departments in the School of Medical Sciences within the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences (FMHS) at the University of Auckland. It has the vision to be recognised locally and internationally for Medical Imaging education and research excellence by promoting and fostering a community of learners and a community of practice, through engaging our partners and stakeholders (both District Health Boards and private providers) in all academic and research activities.

In this substantive, tenure track position as Associate Professor/Professor Medical Imaging, you will be responsible for leading the undergraduate (as part of the medical programme) and postgraduate teaching of Medical Imaging, including graduate student supervision.  The University of Auckland offers the only postgraduate programmes in Medical Imaging in New Zealand.

You will also serve as Head of Radiology, a division within the Department of Anatomy and Medical Imaging, with a five year renewable term. You will continue to grow a successful research programme in the discipline of medical imaging, as well as providing guidance in clinical research projects; for example in hybrid imaging, molecular imaging, clinical imaging, image guided therapy, radiation therapy planning with speciality in areas such as oncology or cardiovascular. There is a preference for a clinical appointee who will further enhance the clinical research profile of the department, however this is not essential.

You will also provide academic and clinical leadership and support for Medical Imaging facilities at the University of Auckland, including the Centre for Advanced MRI (CAMRI). This will include advice and assistance in the strategic development of Medical Imaging infrastructure, liaison with internal stakeholders and DHB and private providers to maintain stability and growth in medical imaging.  CAMRI is based in FMHS and equipped with two MRI, a number of ultrasound machines, and is working towards the purchase of New Zealand’s first PET MRI in the near future. CAMRI’s main purpose is to support basic and clinical research and enhance patient outcomes through the provision of leading edge technical equipment.

The University of Auckland is New Zealand’s pre-eminent research-led University. Established in 1883, it is an international centre of learning and academic excellence. Based in New Zealand’s largest city Auckland, the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences is located on the Grafton Campus adjacent to Auckland City Hospital.

Ranked in the top 100 world universities in the medical disciplines, the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences provides professional undergraduate degrees across a range of disciplines as well as a strong and diverse range of post-graduate programmes and students completing higher research degrees.
