Job Details

A Research Associate position is available to work in the group of Dr Andy Bailey in Biological Sciences. The post is funded for three years and will be part of a multidisciplinary team on the MRC-funded project “Exploring Natures Silent Pharmacy”, seeking to determine the full secondary metabolite potential of fungi as part of the search for new/novel antibiotics.  The main responsibilities will be to explore fungal genome sequences to identify and characterise secondary metabolite pathways and to devise high throughput methods to manipulate these in host, or by heterologous expression to identify the compounds produced. Working in collaboration with other members of the team, the biological activity of novel compounds will be assessed, structures elucidated and pathways refactored to generate novel products.

The successful candidate will be expected to already hold a PhD in Molecular Biology or a closely related area, or have completed their PhD studies and have already submitted their thesis. You will be a highly motivated individual, ideally with a strong background in fungal genomics or in natural product chemistry and a keen interest in science at the biology-chemistry interface. You will be able to work independently and use your initiative. You will have experience of bioinformatic analysis of genome data and genetic manipulation of fungi.

More information about the group can be found at: http://www.bristol.ac.uk/biology/research/plant/pathology/drugs/
