Deputy Dean or Director: Health Stakeholder Relations in the Faculty of Health Sciences.

As a research intensive African university pursuing the ideals of excellence, diversity and relevance, the University of Pretoria UP wishes to invite applications for the post of Deputy Dean or Director: Health Stakeholder Relations in the Faculty of Health Sciences.

To be a successful Health Sciences Faculty, the Office of the Dean must engage actively and positively with a range of Health Sciences stakeholders including the National Department of Health, the Gauteng and Mpumalanga Health Departments and Academic Hospitals, the City of Tshwane, the National Health Laboratory Service, the Health Professions Council of South Africa, the private health sector, health professions associations and our own alumni.

The University of Pretoria is seeking a candidate who, working with the Dean of Health Sciences can build successful relationships with all of these stakeholders in pursuit of the advancement of teaching and learning, research and the Faculty’s contribution to care and socio-economic development as defined within the framework of the vision, mission and ethos of the University and its 2025 strategic plan and transformation goals.

The Faculty of Health Sciences partners with national and provincial Departments of Health (in particular, Gauteng and Mpumalanga) and the National Health Laboratory Service in educating health professionals and scientists and in providing clinical care to patients in tertiary and secondary hospitals and in primary care settings. Credibility and effective liaison with these partners, with with other academic institutions and with relevant organisations are imperative.

The University is seeking a Deputy Dean or Director: Health Stakeholder Relations who understands the higher education and health landscapes, possesses appropriate academic credentials and has credibility with health stakeholders and the requisite interpersonal and leadership skills for success in this role. Fundraising skills will constitute an important requirement.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Deputy Dean or Director will contribute broadly to the Faculty of Health Sciences as a member of the Faculty Executive, but more specifically, will also be responsible for health stakeholder relations.

The Deputy Dean will hold an academic position and contribute to teaching, learning and research in their health sciences discipline. The Director will be required to make a limited academic contribution to teaching, learning and research in one of the health sciences disciplines.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Deputy Dean

  • A doctorate in the medical or related sciences OR a specialist qualification in medicine or dentistry;
  • A proven research track record;
  • Appropriate teaching experience and evidence of successful postgraduate supervision;
  • Proven managerial skills and academic leadership traits;
  • Health stakeholder relations experience;
  • Fundraising experience.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Director

  • A university health professions qualification;
  • Proven managerial skills and academic leadership traits;
  • Proven health stakeholder relations experience;
  • Fundraising experience.

 

ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

  • A doctorate in the medical or related sciences OR a specialist qualification in medicine or dentistry (Director);
  • Experience in a tertiary academic environment in a management capacity (Director);
  • Relevant senior management experience.

 

PLEASE NOTE: Candidates will be required to do a presentation to the Appointments Committee on their vision for the Faculty.

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED medical aid scheme and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.                         

The Deputy Dean will hold a permanent academic appointment in his/her discipline and a term appointment for four years in the first instance as Deputy Dean. The Director will hold a permanent appointment and a term appointment for four years in the first instance as Director.
