Job Details

You will join the Human Factors Engineering team (HFE) to support the submarine Command Teamwork Experimental Test-Bed (ComTET) project with the construction of novel software to be tested as part of the research program. You will use your broad knowledge base of computer science/software engineering to support all aspects of the project, with a focus on the computing aspects. This will also include assisting with running experiments in the ComTET facility, and data analysis.

The primary tasks shall include assisting with the development of novel software (e.g. interfaces) analysis of data and implementing system improvements in the submarine control room simulator. The ComTET project has some primary objectives which would inform the primary drive behind a research project, however, there may also be scope for a researcher to propose and test novel ideas concerning the optimization of a submarine command team from a socio-technical perspective.

The data collected throughout experiments shall include; video recordings of agent behaviour (both human and technology); verbal recordings of communications; recording of data transition between agents (e.g. acoustic sonar information vs. visual target motion analysis display) and cognitive capacity assessment batteries. The data shall be collected in a simulator at the University built as a 1:1 replica of the currently operational Astute class submarine. This includes 10 networked operator stations (sonar, target motion analysis, ship control and periscope).
