  The Opportunity

The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering comprises 35 academic staff, nine professional staff; 28 postdoctoral researchers; 50 staff in two industry-facing institutes, and some 165 PhD students. The department’s strategic research themes are cross-disciplinary in nature: fluid mechanics and microfluidics; aerodynamics; robotics; biomedical devices; computational modelling; sustainable energy systems and design; and engineering materials and additive manufacturing.

The department offers the undergraduate degrees of Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in the streams of Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering and Mechatronic Engineering, with a large proportion of students studying for double degrees in conjunction with other faculties. The department also offers the Mechanical Engineering stream of the Master of Advanced Engineering.

Across the University, Monash offers an integrated network of open-access world-class technology platforms that provide high-quality specialist research facilities and capabilities.

We seek to appoint two suitably qualified research-active Lecturers/Senior Lecturers. Candidates should be committed to cross disciplinary research that will see their research extend to collaboration across one or more of the department’s strategic research themes.

The composite airframes appointee will have a strong background in solid mechanics with experience in the use of composites in fixed wing or rotating wing aircraft, preferably in collaboration with industry or end-users.

The autonomous systems appointee will have a strong background in control, automation and system design with application to autonomous aircraft, preferably in collaboration with industry or end-users.

As a candidate for the level of Lecturer you will possess a PhD in Aerospace Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering, or a closely related discipline. You will also have a strong developing track record with relevant research publications in top-tier journals, some experience in teaching in a tertiary environment, a strategic vision with identified areas for future grant applications, and a high level of interpersonal skills.

As a candidate for the level of Senior Lecturer you will have a PhD in Aerospace Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline. You will also have a strong track record with relevant research publications in top-tier journals, evidence of high quality teaching, research grant success at a level commensurate with expectations in the faculty, and a high level of interpersonal skills.

Our department values equity and diversity and promotes an inclusive workplace culture for staff irrespective of their gender identity, ethnicity or cultural background. We recognise that diversity drives excellence and innovation in research and teaching and a key objective is to lift the proportion of women among academic staff.

Monash University is a member of the Athena SWAN charter which is designed to enhance gender equality in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Medicine (STEMM) disciplines.

As a special measure under Section 12 (1) of the Equal Opportunity Act 2010 (Vic), we strongly encourage applications from suitably qualified female candidates.

In addition to Monash University's attractive remuneration and benefits, the department and faculty provide generous research support including early career mentoring; funded PhD scholarships; grant-writing support; access to seed-funding grants including interdisciplinary research opportunities; and support for innovation in education and curriculum design.

Your application must address the selection criteria outlined in the position description. Please refer toDownload File "How to apply for Monash jobs"

Please indicate clearly in your cover letter whether you are applying for the Lecturer or the Senior Lecturer position, and the discipline area for which you wish to be considered.
