PhD Scholarship: The Laboratory for Neural Stem Cells in Development and Disease

The School of Biomedical Sciences at The University of Queensland is an acknowledged leader in biomedical sciences in Australia. Our University is typically placed around 30 in the world’s top 100 for biomedicine, according to The Times Higher Education World University Rankings.
The Piper Lab is interested in brain development and function, with a specific focus on neural stem cells in cortical development. Using the developing mouse brain as a model system, we employ a range of cellular, molecular, transcriptomic and behavioural approaches to unravel the mechanisms that mediate neural stem cell biology within the developing and the adult brain. Recently, our work has begun to focus on how deficits in sulfate availability can impact neural stem cells during cortical development and subsequent brain function. Sulfate availability is critical to normal functioning of the brain, and lack of sulfate has been linked to disorders including autism. Critically, a mechanistic understanding of how sulfate promotes stem cell biology is missing. We, in collaboration with Dr. David Simmons (SBMS), are seeking a motivated student who is interested in cortical development, and who is driven to better understand the biology of neural stem cells during development and in disease. Successful applicant will be provided with a School-sponsored PhD scholarship, including stipend support commensurable with current Australian Postgraduate Award (APA) rates. The appointee will, however, be expected to apply for ongoing support via the APA, UQ, and other PhD scholarship schemes. The appointee will develop and pursue a project in the role of sulfate availability in cortical development and function, in conjunction with both the Piper and Simmons labs. They will also contribute to a supportive and intellectually vibrant lab culture.
Applicants should possess an appropriate qualification for entry into the PhD training scheme, and should have prior relevant research experience.
The stipend is equivalent to the APA rate, $26,682 per annum, (2017 rate, indexed annually). The scholarship will be for three (3) years with the possibility of two six (6)-month extensions and is subject to the UQ Research Scholarship General Conditions. In some cases, a further top-up to this stipend may be available.
