Job Purpose

The Deputy Operations Manager (DOM) will act as Deputy to the School’s Operations Manager and in this regard will undertake strategic and operational projects that span the breadth of the School’s professional services team and the School’s academic departments. The DOM will have devolved responsibility for the management and leadership of School-wide professional services teams and in the absence of the Operations Manager will be required to ensure that the teams provide appropriate services to a broad range of stakeholders.

The post holder will be responsible for ensuring that knowledge is transferred from the existing Learning & Teaching Manager (ESM) to provide continuous delivery of School Strategy in respect of Learning & Teaching during the secondment period. The DOM will be a member of the School’s Leadership and Teaching Group (which is comprised of the Learning & Teaching Manager and Deputy Learning & Teaching Manager) and at times will deputise for the OM at the School’s Senior Management Team and at College-level Committees.

The post holder will work independently, whilst consulting with senior academic staff and Operations Manager over developments and implementation of procedures to support changes and growth of student numbers. The post holder will participate in cross College initiatives to share best practice and work with colleagues to develop and implement consistent processes and procedures.


Person Specification


  • Formal education to degree level (or equivalent)
  • Significant experience of managing large groups of professional services staff through intermediate managers
  • Excellent leadership and management skills and the ability to motivate teams and manage performance
  • The ability to think critically, to analyse complex data and produce meaningful reports for SMT and College Board that influence policy and facilitate decision-making
  • Evidence of working with a focus on excellence and continuous service improvement
  • Strong interpersonal skills to work with senior managers across the university and colleagues at all levels both within the professional services teams and with academics
  • Significant experience of operational management and implementation in a people and service-driven environment
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to produce a variety of documentation including strategies, operational plans, business cases, minutes and other reports
  • An ability to work under pressure, manage competing priorities, work to tight deadlines and demonstrate personal judgement and resourcefulness
  • First class project planning and management skills
  • A ‘can-do’ attitude and a solutions-driven approach
  • The ability to work independently, to exercise professional judgement and when necessary make difficult decisions
  • Comfortable at operating at senior management level
  • Knowledge and significant expertise in:
  • Working with and influencing senior managers
  • Working with management information and MIS systems
  • Resource planning and financial and budget management
  • Managing operational teams in a service environment
  • Human resources management
  • Managing multiple complex projects
  • Implementing and managing change
  • Knowledge of the Higher Education environment and its business requirements


  • Knowledge and/or experience of working in a social sciences environment
