The University of Queensland has a wonderful research environment, attracting top grades in the national assessment of research quality in all biological disciplines and economics.  The School of Biological Sciences is one of the largest Schools of this type in Australia with 50 full-time academic staff.  The School provides unique opportunities for study or research in plant and animal biology with research programs spanning ecology, molecular plant sciences, marine biology, entomology, and genetics & evolution.

 

The role

The successful appointee will work with a team of researchers to conduct vegetation survey, focussing on rare plant species. Fieldwork involves trips from between 7-20 days. Management of large datasets will also be part of this role. An outstanding candidate will have a record of scientific publications related to the ecology and management of natural systems. The demonstrated capacity to program in R, and high-level GIS skills are essential.

The Research Assistant will also be responsible for assisting staff and students with Travel Forms, Fieldwork Safety Plans and Risk Assessments and the organization of a system for tracking and maintenance of equipment.

 

The person

Applicants should possess qualifications in relevant disciplines. They should have a demonstrated knowledge of some or all of the following areas – ecology, botany, data modelling, and the demonstrated ability to rapidly acquire knowledge in all of those areas.  Strong organisational skills, with attention to detail, are also required.  Applicants should be proficient in managing large datasets and performing complex analysis.  A current clean Australian driver’s license is also essential.

Remuneration

This is a fixed term full time appointment for 1 year at HEW LEVEL 6.  The remuneration package will be in the range $74,207.07 - $79,964.50p.a., plus employer superannuation contributions of up to 17% (total package will be in the range $86,822.27 - $93,558.47pa.
