Job Details

Research Officer

Institute for Molecular Bioscience, The University of Queensland

The Institute’s 500 scientists, support staff and postgraduate students from more than 40 countries are working to improve quality of life for all. IMB has three major divisions and four research centres. IMB’s multidisciplinary research programs focus on advancing medical genomics, drug discovery and biotechnology. By investigating the basis of growth and development at the genetic, molecular, cellular and organ level, our researchers aim to better understand the development processes and pathways involved in human and animal health and disease. They also work to translate these findings into diagnostics; technologies and therapeutics to more effectively prevent, detect and treat disease, and deliver a sustainable future for Australia through initiatives such as clean energy and new agricultural compounds.

IMB is equipped with state-of-the-art research infrastructure including mouse and zebrafish facilities, advanced imaging and microarray platforms, high-throughput sequencing, advanced bioinformatics and proteomics – all of which support the Institute’s leading life sciences research. Details of the research interests of the Institute may be accessed on the Institute’s website at: http://www.imb.uq.edu.au

The role

The successful applicant will use advanced molecular modelling techniques, molecular dynamics, computational methods and novel software to discover and rationally design modulators of protein-protein interactions, GPCRs and ion channels. The applicant will also have intimate knowledge of MAIT cells and antigen protein presentation and trafficking.

The person

Applicants should possess a PhD qualification in molecular modelling, computational chemistry, biochemistry, immunology. You should also have a strong desire to conduct molecular dynamic simulations on protein-protein interaction complexes such as MHC1-related protein and T cell receptor interaction to study the molecular basis of the activation of inhibition mechanism. This requires knowledge of protein-protein interactions, hot spot analysis, interaction energy calculations, and relevant insights in adaptive immunity. Experience in all of the following molecular modelling, ligand docking, molecular dynamics simulations, enzymology (inhibitor evaluation), GPCR biased ligand functional assays, medicinal chemistry including in silico lead optimisation, basic cell and immunology techniques is also required.

The University of Queensland values diversity and inclusion.

Applications are particularly encouraged from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. For further information please contact our Australian Indigenous Employment Coordinator at: atsi_recruitment@uq.edu.au

Applications are also encouraged from women.

This role is a full-time position; however flexible working arrangements may be negotiated.
