Assistant Professor (Biology/SEEMS – Weed Ecology)

The University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley is seeking applications for a faculty position (Assistant Professor) as a cross appointment with majority assignment to the Department of Biology and a minority assignment to the School of Earth, Environmental and Marine Sciences (SEEMS) to begin Fall 2018. This is a full-time, tenure track position involving teaching, research and service. The successful candidate is expected to establish an externally-funded nationally recognized research program in weed ecology and management, publish in peer-reviewed journals, and present their research at local, national and international scientific meetings. She/he should be able to teach a variety of courses offered by the department and mentor undergraduate and graduate students in research. Faculty will be expected to integrate next generation technology (audience response ware, webcasting, learning management systems, online teaching and assessment) and competency based education to maximize student success. In accordance with the UT System Regents’ Rules, this individual will serve on departmental, college and university committees, and use professional expertise to perform services that benefit society and the broader professional community. UTRGV is a distributed campus and faculty may be required to teach at different locations, however this position will have a primary assignment on the Edinburg campus. UTRGV faculty will be expected to demonstrate a strong commitment to research, student success and to advancing the university, college, and program missions and are committed to UTRGV’s guiding principles ( us/about-utrgv/transition-plan/guiding-principles), which include promoting access to postsecondary education to a diverse student body and to become one of the largest and most successful Hispanic-serving emerging research institutions in the U.S.A.

Minimum Qualifications

Ph.D. /M.D. /M.D.-Ph.D. or other equivalent terminal science degree

Discipline Specific Required Qualifications

A Ph.D. degree in Biology, Plant Ecology, Agricultural Sciences or related discipline from an accredited university. It is expected that the candidate will have postdoctoral experience and a strong track record of publications. Evidence to secure competitive grant funding will need to be demonstrated.

Preferred Qualifications

The Biology Department and SEEMS have core strengths in cell and molecular biology research, ecology and environmental sciences, and an emerging strength in Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems. We seek to strengthen and integrate our program with expertise in weed ecology. It is expected that the candidate will have a proven track record of successful research in one or more of the following: plant ecology/physiology; weed community biology and ecology; biocontrol methodology and application; implementation of genomics and molecular techniques. The candidate is expected to extend the practical application of these approaches in a field-oriented research program that could address plant invasions and its impact on agroecosystems, and the response of individual and weed communities to different management techniques, with an emphasis on sustainable approaches to weed management.  A demonstrated commitment to community engaged research is preferred to maximize working relationships with local and regional USDA personnel, other university research, the UTRGV Center for Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Advancement, and a variety of local agricultural partners, including local area farms.  The candidate should have outstanding communications (both verbal and written), and interpersonal and team-work skills. In addition, the candidate should have some experience in teaching, student advising or guided research experiences. It is preferred that the candidate has experience in managing a research laboratory, submission of grant proposals, progress reports, research compliance applications, budgets, laboratory supplies and equipment ordering.

Additional Information       

UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code §51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
