The School of Biomedical Sciences

The University of Queensland School of Biomedical Sciences is a distinguished centre for teaching and research in the academic disciplines of Anatomy, Developmental Biology, Physiology, Pharmacology and Pathology. The School has more than 40 full-time research and teaching staff and is one of the largest Schools of its type in Australia. It has links to other prestigious research centres on the St Lucia campus including the Queensland Brain Institute (QBI), the Institute of Molecular Bioscience (IMB) and the Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (AIBN). Our diverse research provides an exciting environment for national and international research fellows and higher degree students. In addition to its graduate research programs, the School teaches undergraduate students in Science, Medicine, and Health Sciences.

The role

The successful applicant in this career-advancing opportunity will be appointed in the Muscle Research Laboratory Headed by Associate Professor Bradley Launikonis. The position offers opportunities to learn novel fluorescence techniques, to address individually-developed and collaboratively-generated research questions, and also to supervise honours, masters and doctoral students.

The successful applicant will conduct high impact research on the physiology of Ca2+ homeostasis and Ca2+ movements relevant to thermoregulation in mammals.  The project offers the opportunity to work with freshly biopsied human skeletal muscle fibres using techniques developed in The Muscle Research Lab. The overarching aim of this research will be to explore adaptations in skeletal muscle fibres from mammals, including humans that have allowed skeletal muscle to become a heat generator. The successful applicant will be encouraged to apply for her/his own funding but have access to ongoing research support and world-class facilities. She/he will become part of an outstanding research environment that is focused on advancing our understanding of the complex physiology and evolution of skeletal muscle and translating basic research findings into better health outcomes.

The person

As the successful applicant, you should hold PhD in Cell or Muscle Physiology, Biophysics, Neuroscience, or related discipline and relevant research skills. You should also have a strong desire to develop a highly successful and productive research career in the biomedical sciences, good general research skills, a strong methodological background, excellent analytic and statistical skills, very good writing abilities, and the capacity to work with multidisciplinary research teams.

Remuneration

This is a full-time, 12 month fixed term appointment at Academic level A. The remuneration package will be in the range $81,545 - $87,535 p.a., plus employer superannuation contributions of up to 17% (total package will be in the range $95,407- $102,415 p.a.).
