The University of Adelaide is one of Australia's leading Group of Eight, research-intensive universities and is consistently ranked among the top 1% of universities in the world. Established in 1874, it is Australia's third oldest university with a strong reputation for preparing educated leaders and delivering research outcomes that contribute to local, national and global wellbeing.

University of Adelaide employees enjoy a range of benefits and favourable work conditions that include opportunities for career development and advancement.

The Faculty of Engineering, Computer and Mathematical Sciences is one of five faculties at the University of Adelaide. It is a centre for learning, teaching and research in a vast range of engineering disciplines, computer science and high level mathematics. Academic staff are world leaders in their fields of consulting, advanced fundamental and applied research. Graduates are highly regarded by employers. The faculty offers an intellectually exciting and innovative environment in which to work, within seven Schools, including:

The School of Chemical Engineering, teaching and research programs educate chemical engineers to play leading roles in the chemical, biochemical, environmental, food technology, energy and combustion and minerals/materials industries. Dedicated to achieving excellence in research, teaching and knowledge transfer, the school offers a stimulating and intellectual environment in which to work.

The ‘Geovision’ project is a new initiative within a Commonwealth-funded Co-operative Research Centre Project (CRC-P project) involving Boart Longyear, the world’s leading provider of drilling services, as primary industry partner, The University of Adelaide and SRA Information Technology Ltd. The project will develop and commercialise multisensory core scanners, data fusion and machine learning algorithm to derive geological and structural data not currently collected. It will improve decision making at exploration and mining drill sites, rapidly acquiring novel information from core and providing outputs in near-real time. It will be developed in and exported from Australia as a value-add service in the METS industry and an invaluable decision-making tool in exploration and mining. This project will help develop to commercialisation a product that will significantly speed up data collection approaching real time, lower the costs of collecting and analysing data, and give clients new data outputs that will increase the value of samples collected in the expensive drilling process. Boart Longyear has a preproduction, proof-of-concept prototype ready to be used as a foundation.

    Your role:

You will be expected to collaborate closely with Boart Longyear, including regular visits to their field test site to conduct testing of various types using existing and newly-developed instrumentation. A large part of the duties are centred on the verification and calibration of the new technologies, and advising on modifications/additions to the range and types of data to be collected. Although instrument development and commercialisation are key aims, the project team encourages publication of results and presentation to peer audiences at local and national conferences. There will also be regular meetings of all project parties, where you will be expected to present your work.

    Salary:

    (Level A) $65,894 - $89,425 per annum

    Superannuation:

An employer contribution of 9.5% applies

    Term of position:

This fixed-term contract is available from 1st March 2018 (negotiable) for a period of two years

    • demonstrated skills in recognition and interpretation of rock and mineral textures at the hand-specimen/drillcore scale
