Isolated islands or metacommunities? Thermal restriction and distribution patterns of spring-dwelling species

The Biogeograpy/Geoecology Group at the University of Basel invites applications for a PhD position in environmental science. Springs are peculiar freshwater habitats threatened by Global Climate Change. Owing to their position at the beginning of headwaters they can be seen as island-like habitats. Especially thermal stability was identified as the main reason for the exclusive occurrence of spring-dwelling species in springs in the past. No fundamental research has been conducted so far to verify both aspects - isolation and thermal stability.

Your position

The key objective of the advertised PhD project is to understand the biogeographical and environmental drivers underlying crenobiosis. One goal will be to analyse the vulnerability of species described as spring specialists to changes in temperature under controlled laboratory conditions. The second goal will be investigate the isolation of spring taxa on metacommunity level along a longitudinal geographical gradient in the Alps.

Your profile

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate interested in biogeographical research questions related to freshwater ecology and in experimental freshwater research. You must hold a MSc/Diploma in environmental sciences, geoecology, biogeography, limnology, zoology or a related discipline. A strong background in metacommunity modelling and/or freshwater species identification is beneficial. Within the PhD project fieldwork in partly steep alpine areas is included. A good standard of written and spoken English is required.

We offer you

The PhD project is embedded in a Swiss National Science Foundation (SNF) project. The PhD project involves team work with another PhD student and collaborations with national and international partners. Salaries corresponding to SNF regulations and funding is secured for 4 years. The position would ideally start early 2018.

Application / Contact

Interested candidates should submit a letter of application, a statement of research interests, a summary of the master thesis, CV and contact information of at least 2 referees as a single pdf as early as possible, but not later than January 15th, 2018.

Questions related to the project and applications should be addressed to Stefanie.vonfumetti@unibas.ch
