Job Details

Details

The frequency range between 0.1 and 3 THz (i.e., λ = 300 and 100 μm) holds promise for a myriad of applications such as high-speed communication, non-destructive inspection in security and industrial control process, and medical imaging. Hence, a great deal of effort has been carried out in recent times toward the development of components and systems operating in such frequency range.

THz radiation holds promise for imaging since it is nonionizing (unlike X-rays) and can penetrate through many optically opaque media. A limitation of THz imaging is poor resolution (hundreds of microns) compared to optical imaging due to μm-long THz wavelength. Near-field raster-scanning improve the resolution below the so-called diffraction limit to a few tens of microns at the expense of time.

This PhD research programme will look at super-resolution imaging techniques to achieve spatial resolution of few tens of microns with THz radiation and without the need of near-field raster scanning. The PhD student will carry out specifically the following tasks: design, modelling and implementation (using a commercial all fibre-coupled Terahertz time-domain spectrometer and CW sources along with a THz camera) of the super-resolution THz microscope and develop the fast image super-resolution reconstruction algorithm. Other activities supporting the study will also be carried out when required.

We expect the PhD candidate to develop the expertise required to lead an experimental research project, to train undergraduate students, to interact with colleagues with different backgrounds (physics and engineering) and from different disciplines (i.e., electromagnetism, microwave engineering, material science, optics). Details of the project will be agreed with the interested candidates to tailor the research on his/her interests.
The research programme will take place in an international and interdisciplinary environment, which will substantially favour collaborative opportunities 1) within the School of Physics and Astronomy, 2) within Schools of Engineering, and 3) within other research institutions.

Funding Notes

Applications are sought from highly motivated students graduating with first degree (2:1 or higher) in physics or engineering (and preferably a Master degree). Funding is awarded on a competitive basis (i.e., the project which receives the best applicant will be awarded the funding). The funding is only available to UK/EU nationals, and it will cover tuition fees and provide a stipend for 3.5 years.

Non-EU Students: If you have the correct qualifications and access to your own funding, either from your home country or your own finances, your application to work on this project will be considered.
