The Geoecology Group (Prof. Heiri) of the Faculty of Science seeks a Palaeoecological Laboratory Manager

 

Your tasks

The responsibilities of the candidate will be to

  • Maintain our analytical instruments and perform sample analyses at highest international quality standards, also in collaboration with partner groups

  • Professionally manage our laboratory, maintain and develop sample preparation protocols and support students and postdocs in their analytical work

  • Chemically and manually prepare sediment samples for microfossil and geochemical analysis and contribute towards microscope identification and enumeration of microfossils (e.g. pollen, invertebrate remains, or diatoms)

  • Maintain fieldwork equipment for sampling of lake sediment and peat sequences as well as participate in and assist with planning of fieldwork campaigns

  • Support members of the group in analysing hydrobiological and limnological samples

  • Archive sediment cores, microfossil samples and data

  • Enforce university and group safety regulations

 

Requirements

We are looking for a dynamic, reliable and motivated candidate with M.Sc./Diploma or PhD in natural sciences and ideally with experience in palaeoecological research, lake sediment sampling and/or microscope or geochemical analysis of microfossils in late Quaternary deposits. We expect the candidate to have experience with chemical sample preparation, fieldwork and basic light microscopy, and to possess a valid driver license. Proficiency in English and German is required.

We offer an interesting position in an international, interdisciplinary research environment in Basel as well as international working experiences. The initial position is limited to two years but will be extended to a permanent contract if positively evaluated after two years. Salary and social benefits are provided according to University of Basel rules.
