6x Early Stage Researcher - Marie Sklodowska-Curie - School of Chemistry
iDESIGN provides an exciting opportunity for six highly motivated early-stage researchers to participate in an EU-funded project, which has the overarching aim of training the next generation of drug discovery chemists. iDESIGN is an academic-industrial partnership, which will garner the expertise of scientists from both sectors, combining the innovation and cutting-edge synthesis capabilities from academia with the multidisciplinary expertise and milestone focus of drug discovery in industry to deliver the molecules and the research scientists that the sector now needs.
Research and Training
Researchers will be registered on a 36-month PhD programme at the University of Birmingham. Each researcher will have his/her own PhD research project that has been developed by the Academic Supervisors in conjunction with an Industrial Supervisor from our Industry Partners, Mercachem (Netherlands) or AnalytiCon Discovery (Germany). Each research project has a common theme, namely to use cutting-edge organic synthesis and catalysis methods to develop bespoke compound libraries of structurally and functionally diverse, three-dimensional molecules, which possess desirable physicochemical properties for drug discovery.
In addition to their PhD projects, researchers will benefit from an expansive multidisciplinary training programme that will be delivered by all three partners in the form of a Core Skills Training Programme focusing on i) Advanced Theory and Practice, ii) Generic Research Skills Training, iii) Key Skills Development and iv) Career Development.
Each researcher will have an Academic Supervisor from the School of Chemistry at Birmingham and an Industrial Supervisor from either Mercachem or AnalytiCon Discovery, depending on where they will undertake their industrial placement. Both Supervisors combined with Project Mentors (one Academic Mentor and one Industry Mentor per researcher) will be responsible for project supervision, monitoring and reviewing progress and providing feedback. They will also support personal career development.
- Masters degree in Chemistry
- Practical experience in organic synthesis and associated purification and analytical techniques
- Ability to analyse and interpret information and data
- Ability to communicate complex information clearly
- Fluency in the use of relevant theoretical models and experimental techniques for problem solving
- Ability to assess resource requirements and use resources effectively
