The University of Adelaide is one of Australia's leading Group of Eight, research-intensive universities and is consistently ranked among the top 1% of universities in the world. Established in 1874, it is Australia's third oldest university with a strong reputation for preparing educated leaders and delivering research outcomes that contribute to local, national and global wellbeing.

University of Adelaide employees enjoy a range of benefits and favourable work conditions that include opportunities for career development and advancement.

The Faculty of Sciences is one of five faculties at the University of Adelaide. As the first university in Australia to grant degrees in science (1882), science has long been at the cornerstone of the institution and this continues today. As a research and education leader in fields such as agriculture, food & wine, animal & veterinary sciences, biological sciences, and physical sciences, the Faculty offers an exciting and innovative work environment.

The School of Agriculture, Food and Wine is embedded in the Faculty of Sciences. The school is located at the University's Waite campus, the pre-eminent agricultural and wine science research site in the Southern Hemisphere. The School offers academic programs in food and nutrition science, applied biology, agricultural science, viticulture and oenology and plant biotechnology. The School of Agriculture, Food and Wine has world-class expertise and facilities in human nutrition, agricultural and plant sciences, plant breeding, viticulture and oenology and biochemistry. The School is home to a range of research centres and works closely with a number of co-located partners including CSIRO (Agriculture, Land & Food), South Australian Research & Development Institute and Australian Wine Research Institute, as well as the South Australian Health & Medical Research Institute.

The Australian Plant Phenomics Facility (APPF) is a national research facility established under the Australian Government’s National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy. The Adelaide node of the APPF, known as The Plant Accelerator®, is located at the University of Adelaide’s Waite Precinct. The custom built facility houses state-of-the-art imaging systems that allow the continuous measurements of the physical attributes (phenotype) of plants automatically and non-destructively.

We are currently seeking a quality-oriented, conscientious and creative Postdoctoral Fellow in Hyperspectral Imaging to lead the integration of hyperspectral imaging into the facility’s large robotic phenotyping platform and drive the implementation of VNIR and SWIR sensor use in other applications, such as a benchtop linear stage as well as ground-based and airborne field phenotyping platforms.

In this service delivery role, you will develop and implement acquisition protocols for hyperspectral imaging, data pre-processing and application of models to non-destructively determine chemical components of plants. You will collaborate closely with the dynamic team of The Plant Accelerator®, public and privately funded facility users from Australia and overseas, and our collaborators at the IFF Fraunhofer Institute in Magdeburg, Germany.

The Postdoctoral Fellow in Hyperspectral Imaging will apply the patented machine learning methods of our collaborators to develop models for the non-destructive measurement of nutrients and compounds and will develop their own methods. The position will also involve contributing to the organisation and management of project applications for external funding. You will be encouraged to co-supervise PhD, masters and honours students.
