Job Details

Data Pitch will create a European data innovation ecosystem that will bring together data and technology providers with startups and SMEs with fresh ideas for data-driven products and services. Data Pitch will run a large-scale competition in which thousands of startups and SMEs will put forward proposals to solve data challenges

You will help design the competition by implementing a range of consultation mechanisms, including interviews, online surveys, focused workshops, and idea-sourcing and devising a process by which the collected feedback is translated into high-impact data challenges. You will help manage the competitive call, including the call announcement, its documentation, preparing the platform for submissions, running webinars, developing training for applicants, helping organise hackathons, and managing the review of the proposals and interviews of the shortlisted companies. You will help promote the project by contributing to specific outreach events and advise startups selected for funding when they are if their idea is in your area of interest. You will also lead on specific deliverable reports and prepare a call dashboard, and liaise with the rest of the Data Pitch team, which spans across three other organisations (the Open Data Institute, Beta-I, and Dawex).

The post is based in the Web and Internet Science (WAIS) research group, which undertakes interdisciplinary research focusing on the science and technology of the Web and the Internet. WAIS is one of six research groups within Electronics and Computer Science (ECS) at the University of Southampton. ECS is the UK’s leading academic unit integrating computer science, electronics, and electrical engineering.

You should have a PhD* or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in Computer Science or a related field or equivalent work experience. In particular, expertise in one or more of the following areas is essential: data science (in particular, topics around data sharing, data governance, data protection); open data; Big Data; data-driven innovation. In the same time, the position requires a candidate with outstanding time management, organisation, and collaboration skills. The post includes joint work with other institutions and meetings with the project team (quarterly or similar) in locations across Europe. It also requires strong English communication skills (oral and written) to engage with different organisations and roles, produce clear, comprehensive documentation for the competitive call and run webinars with companies interested in applying.

It is critical that the application shows clear evidence of both the technical and non-technical aspects relevant to the job.

The post is available for 1 year.
