Job Details

Are you an ambitious researcher looking for your next challenge?

Do you have an established background in applied mathematics and fluid dynamics?

Do you want to further your career in one of the UK’s leading research intensive universities?

We are looking for a Research Fellow to join our EPSRC funded project investigating 21st century dynamic flood control strategies in Yorkshire. In this project, we are developing new mathematics to understand how to dynamically and actively hold back flood waters, which will involve real-time dynamic hydraulic control with the aim to provide expert guidelines on mathematical flood control. In particular, we are examining two ongoing flood mitigation projects: the use of reservoirs to catch flood-peak volumes in the Calder River Valley, and expanding storage of flood-peak waters in the River Aire to protect Bradford and Leeds. We will consider mathematical idealisations of these two cases, amenable to explorative and innovative mathematical, numerical and some laboratory modelling, the latter involving our Wetropolis flood demonstrator.

The project is funded and part of the EPSRC Senior Fellowship in Digital Technology for Living with Environmental Change, Data Assimilation for the REsilient city (DARE), held by Dr Sarah Dance, University of Reading. The project will therefore involve close collaboration within the DARE project, including workshops and bespoke team meetings.

You will have a PhD in Applied Mathematics and Fluid Dynamics or a closely allied discipline, together with experience in theoretical and numerical mathematical modelling, fluid dynamics, CFD, data assimilation and analysis, hydraulic and river flow modelling, and (hydraulic) control theory. You will also have the ability to conduct independent research and a developing track record of publications in international journals, as well as excellent communication, planning and team working skills.
