The School of Chemical Engineering is a multi-disciplinary and vibrant environment for outstanding study and research.The School is internationally renowned for its pioneering research in the areas of structured materials, formulation engineering, healthcare technologies and energy storage. A recipient of a Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Higher Education in 2011 for research excellence, the School was ranked top in the recent REF 2014 exercise for the impact of its research within industry.

The School has 37 permanent academic staff, over 50 research staff, over 150 postgraduate research students and some 660 undergraduate students. The School regularly attracts research income in excess of £10 million per year through a balanced portfolio of grants from the UK Research Councils (RCUK), the European Union and Industry. The School’s research is supported by two Centres for Doctoral Training in Formulation Engineering and in Fuel Cells and their Fuels.We have recently been awarded a substantial Faraday fast-start project, Recycling of Lithium Ion Batteries (ReLIB), funded by the ISCF Faraday Challenge Research Institute.Through this project we are looking to strengthen our activities in sustainable processing and recycling of critical elements and materials, in strong collaboration with the Birmingham Centre for Strategic Elements and Critical Materials.

Research in the School is structured around the following themes:

  • Formulation Engineering, including microstructure engineering, particle technology and multiphase processing and sustainable processing and critical materials recycling;
  • Energy, including Birmingham Centre for Energy Storage, Bioenergy and Fuel Cells and their Fuels;
  • Healthcare Technologies Institute, including nanoengineering, biomaterials and tissue engineering.

We thus seek to appoint a lecturer or senior lecturer in Chemical Engineering with a focus on sustainable processing in reflection of these exciting new developments who will contribute to the continuing growth and success of the School.The overall roles within this post are:

  • To initiate and conduct international-quality research in sustainable processing, and to bring originality and new research directions. It is expected that the candidate will bring in significant research funding from RCUK, Innovate UK, Industry and international funding organisations as well as working on the new ReLIB project.
  • To develop and deliver undergraduate, postgraduate and CPD programmes in line with the School’s teaching strategy and to participate in the School’s overall contribution to the University.
  • To seek knowledge transfer and business engagement opportunities to support research into sustainable processing, particularly in support of the ReLIB project.
  • To collaborate with the Birmingham Centre for Strategic Elements and Critical Materials.
