Assistant/Associate Professor of Wildlife Disease Ecology

Position: Texas A&M AgriLife Research, Uvalde ( is seeking a highly motivated and visionary wildlife disease ecologist at the Assistant/Associate Professor level for a 12-month position with 100% research appointment. Initial salary shall be commensurate with qualifications and experience.


1. Develop, integrate, and apply novel approaches (including spatial modelling, phenotypic and genotypic data analyses, and modern molecular techniques) to discover solutions to prevent and/or mitigate the spread and emergence of wildlife diseases. Of particular interest are those diseases shared by wildlife and livestock.

2. Attract external grants and contracts to develop and support this new Wildlife Disease Ecology Program.

3. Identify strategic research priorities in the conservation and management of native wildlife populations and function as a leader and/or be an integral part of multidisciplinary teams primarily concerned with the interaction of diseases and genetics, physiology, nutrition, and climate change.

4. Direct graduate students in research.

5. Participate in academic affairs of the center department, college, and university as needed.


1. PhD degree in wildlife disease ecology/biology, wildlife epidemiology, wildlife conservation and management or related field of study.

2. Experience in area of specialization.

3. Ability to write grant proposals to secure external funding.

4. Evidence of publishing in top peer-reviewed journals and participation in professional societies.

5. Demonstrated ability to communicate with wildlife managers, students, professionals, and other scientists.

Preference will be given to applicants with:

1. Both a PhD and DVM.

2. Strong quantitative skills.

3. Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with faculty, and state, federal, and private natural resource organizations.


Uvalde is a community of 16,000 people located in southwest Texas, about an hour and a half from San Antonio. Much of the surrounding land is used for agriculture, although the Hill Country lies just to the north with plenty of opportunities for outdoor recreation. Several state parks and state natural areas are within a two hour radius drive. The Texas A&M AgriLife Research & Extension Center at Uvalde houses faculty from a variety of research and extension programs, including breeding and genetics, plant biochemistry, plant physiology, plant pathology, horticulture, economics, range science, wildlife, and 4-H.
