Job Details

School of Mathematics and Physics

The School of Mathematics and Physics is a School within the Faculty of Science at the University of Queensland. The Discipline of Mathematics is located in the School of Mathematics and Physics. It is the leading provider of tertiary mathematics education in Queensland. Undergraduate programs offered are BMath, BSc, BA (each with an Honours year) and BAdvSci; Coursework degrees (MSc, MFinMath, MDataSc) and research degrees (MPhil and PhD) are offered at postgraduate level.

The Centre for Applications in Natural Resource Mathematics (CARM) is a School Centre in the School of Mathematics and Physics at The University of Queensland. The Centre is co-funded by UQ and the Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF). The Centre focuses on the development and application of mathematical and statistical theory and tools that will provide outcomes in the management of fisheries, water security, and conservation. It provides UQ students with quantitative skills critical for Australia’s future sustainability. More information can be found at http://www.smp.uq.edu.au/CARM.

Details of the research interests of academic staff may be accessed on the school’s web site at http://www.smp.uq.edu.au/

The role

The ARC project considers controlling partially observable systems which are dependent on a random background environment comprised of multiple resources evolving in parallel over time.  The controller aims to harvest these resources in an optimal manner - by attempting to maximize throughput while simultaneously maintaining time consistent safety. That is, the probability of a catastrophe at any such resource is consistently minimized. Many problems in conservation management and engineering systems are dependent on random environments and entail risk of failure. The challenge of consistently minimizing such a risk while achieving satisfactory and sustainable resource consumption is considerable. This project develops analytical and numerical methods for optimal control in such scenarios. Applications to sustainable fisheries will be explored but the methodology developed will be applicable to generic safety critical systems.

The person

Applicants should possess doctoral qualifications in mathematics or a cognate discipline. We seek a well-trained mathematical scientist with expertise in stochastic systems, appled probability and computational methods to work on an Australian Research Council Discovery project. You should also have a strong desire to develop a successful and highly-productive research career in mathematical sciences, good general research skills, a strong methodological background, excellent analytic skills and very good writing abilities.

The University of Queensland values diversity and inclusion and actively encourages applications from those who bring diversity to the University. Please refer to the University’s Diversity and Inclusion webpage (http://www.uq.edu.au/equity) for further information and points of contact if you require additional support.

Remuneration

This is a full-time, fixed term appointment at Academic level A. The remuneration package will be in the range $81,545.80 - $87,535.13 p.a., plus employer superannuation contributions of up to 17% (total package will be in the range $95,408.59 - $102,416.10 p.a.).
