Research Associate in Biochemistry
A postdoctoral research position is available in the group of Professor Mark Szczelkun within the School of Biochemistry, University of Bristol, UK. The post is for 12 months and is funded as part of BrisSynBio, a multi-disciplinary research centre that focuses on the biomolecular design and engineering aspects of synthetic biology, and has been established as one of six Synthetic Biology Research Centres in the UK. The project is titled “Towards re-engineering tools for binding epigenetic markers”, and seeks to examine how the bacterial Type IV restriction enzymes search for methylated DNA sites, and how they recognise the DNA modification through base flipping.
You will have a background in biochemistry, biophysics, or a related area. You should also show a demonstrable interest in enzyme/molecular genetic research. You will be using and helping to develop single-molecule microscopy and fluorescence spectroscopy assays to follow enzyme function, so quantitative skills will be important. You will be expected to work in collaboration with the other members of the DNA-Protein Interactions Unit.
The successful candidate will hold, or expect to hold shortly, a PhD in biochemistry or a related area. This position will be attractive to a highly motivated individual with a keen interest in science at the biology-physics interface.
For informal enquiries, please contact Professor Mark Szczelkun; 0117 3312158, email@example.com
The closing date for applications is: 23:59 on Tuesday 6 March 2018.
The University is committed to creating and sustaining a fully inclusive culture. We welcome applicants from all backgrounds and communities.
