Job Details

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral Research Associate (PDRA) in statistics/machine-learning/data-science tenable from 3 April 2018, for a period of 35 months. This project, funded by the UK BBSRC grant “Bayesian and machine-learning-based analysis of high-volume super-resolution microscopy data for molecular-level cell phenotyping”, will deliver statistical theory and methodology in support of the following aims: identifying simple morphological elements (e.g. clusters, fibres) in point processes; modelling how morphological elements combine to generate more complex cellular architecture; classification and anomaly detection with point processes. The PDRA will work with Dr Patrick Rubin-Delanchy, in the Institute for Statistical Science, School of Mathematics, University of Bristol, collaborating with Dr Dylan Owen’s jointly-funded research group leading the imaging and biological aspects of the project at King’s College London.

The applicant should have, or expect to soon receive, a PhD in Statistics or other theory-driven discipline showing strong mathematical ability. Evidence of high-quality scientific writing and programming experience are also desirable.

The School of Mathematics at the University of Bristol is currently on a growth path and is scheduled to move into a state-of-the-art building for the mathematical sciences (a 33m remodelling of the Grade II listed Fry building) in 2018. This will co-locate all mathematical scientists onto a single site with close connections to many scientific schools across the physical and life sciences. The Institute for Statistical Science, in the school, is one of the UK's strongest centres for Statistics. The candidate can therefore look forward to working in a dynamic and vibrant research environment pioneering world-class data-science research.

For informal enquiries please contact Dr Patrick Rubin-Delanchy (patrick.rubin-delanchy@bristol.ac.uk).

The closing date for applications is 23:59 on Sunday 25 March 2018.

The University is committed to creating and sustaining a fully inclusive culture.  We welcome applicants from all backgrounds and communities.
