Essential

  • First degree in a relevant area such as Geology, Zoology, Ecology or Palaeontology
  • Ability to understand and clear communicate complex information
  • Understanding of and ability to interpret and work with published stratigraphic, taxonomic and other fossil record data
  • Experience working with databases
  • The ability to work both independently and as part of a research team

 

Desirable

  • PhD in Palaeontology or Evolutionary Biology or other relevant field
  • Previous experience working with fossil vertebrates and/or deep time diversity patterns
  • Track record of high-quality scientific publications
  • Evidence of quantitative and analytical skills, potentially including experience of using the statistical language R

 

The successful applicant will be employed for one year to work as part of a team funded by the European Research Council (ERC) focused on testing the spatial and temporal patterns and abiotic and biotic drivers of the diversification of terrestrial tetrapods over the Phanerozoic, including comparisons to marine diversity.

The research assistant will support the research team through the development of spatially and temporally comprehensive datasets of fossil vertebrate taxonomy, occurrences and specimen completeness. This will be achieved primarily by working with the Paleobiology Database (www.paleobiodb.org), entering new data and modifying and checking existing data. Although the primary role of this position will be database compilation, there will be opportunities to work to support other members of the research team in conducting quantitative meta-analyses to document major temporal and spatial patterns in species-richness over long geological timescales, and test relationships with potential drivers.

Opportunities will be provided for the research assistant to collaborate in the dissemination of research results through outstanding publications in leading international journals, conference presentations and outreach activities. Funding will be available for the research assistant to undertake relevant training courses and attend national conferences.
